Tell me what you guys think - 1976 kz900 ltd

So I am going to pick this up tomorrow. $2400......worth it? anything specific I should look for? let me know

A quick glance tells me it is worth it. Bear in mind that it will be expensive to restore it to stock (if that is what you want to do). Make sure the VIN's are correct for the model (check www.zedder.com ).

Put your finger in the exhaust and see if there's any oil. Good price even if there is as long as you want to keep it.

Jason, looks like a nice score to me. I can tell you from experience. I bought a KZ900 for around a $1000.00. And I put into it at least $2700.00 (not including my labor) to get mine to look something like the one you have pictured. Lets not even talk about how many man hours (free labor) it the effort took. On top of that the 10 months of not being able to ride it. So yes, if it is a road worthy nothing much to do bike you are way ahead of the game. If I was to do it all over, I would have spent at least $2500.00 on an decent bike with not much to do on it. The only thing I would suggest is making sure the tires are good (check the date codes) and the batter is relatively new. You won't want to spend $400 on these items since you are already paying a good price (fair price) for the bike. Also, look the forks where the boots are to make sure you don't see any oil residue. Changing the fork seals is a pain. Want to avoid that. Good luck. Did you find this one locally? Good luck, Joe.

Its about 2 hours from where I live. Im hoping she runs as good as she looks. Bike has brand new tires, oil just changed, and from what he says, a decent battery, He also states the paint is good, with no oil leaks, 28,000 miles on the odo. I just want to make sure I am getting my money's worth. I have had many, many, bikes over the years, but never a kz900/1000....always lusted for, but never pulled the trigger as there was always something bigger and better to do. I am super excited. Oh, and I forget to tell ya, he told me he would take $2300. Do you think I should pull the trigger, or do you think something nicer will pop up this winter for the same amount of money?

Mcdroid - from what I can tell, the only things missing are mirrors, turn signals, and airbox. What else are you seeing?

swest - if there were oil in the exhaust, wouldn't it smoke like hell from the heat when running?

Maybe a puff at start up but it will run. Unless done the valve guide seals are hard and will leak. I still think it's worth the money.

If I were restoring, then include paint and the Jardine exhaust system...both of which are pricey...personally, if it runs good, I'd not hesitate. I think what Swest was getting at is that although many of these 30+ year-old bikes are low mileage, all those rubber bits on the inside of the motor will or have deteriorated and need to be replaced (like valve stem seals, cam chain adjusters, etc.)...

I would have no problem buying it for that price. Seems like an great price. Especially with new tires and it runs good. I bought good mirrors off eBay for around $15. Just compare it to the black one you were looking at around $1500.00. Think how much time and money it would take to bring it the same condition as this one. In the end, way more than $2300.00. As long as the compression is good and it runs properly then you are golden. Ask if the valves have been checked/adjusted. No big deal, but good information to have for yourself.
