new to me 1978 KZ 1000 was created by Treetall
Hello Everyone.
I acquired a 1978 KZ1000 back around the end of Jan. From a friend who's owned it since 1988. It's been park since 2011. He was going to restore it when he retired. But due to health issues that's not going to happen. I've been lurking here since.
The motor was seized. I got it to break loose. I cleaned the carbs, and cleaned and lined the gas tank.
I wanted to see if i could get it running before I got too carried away! This I was able to accomplish !! She only runs for a minute or so and dies. So I know I need to redo the carbs, the o-rings are hard and brittle and also a number of other parts need replacing.
My Question is where can I source a set of o-rings to rebuild the carbs. Some of them seem to be reg. metric o-rings. But others are an odd size, ie: Pilot screw o-ring.
The rest of the carbs are in good shape. As mentioned here, I don't need new jets etc.
BTW There's a lot of really good info and write ups on this site.

Welcome, plenty of info and advice here from seasoned Z/KZ riders/spanner men.
Best source for sparts will be dependent on which side of the Atlantic you reside.

Welcome. Sounds like your a capable person. Good for you to here in run. That’s a big accomplishment. You really need to post pictures so we can identify parts and get you correct information and goodies. After 40+ years assuming is not a good tactic.

I live on this side of the 49th in this frozen tundra.
I've had my share of KZ's back in the 80's. I had a 1980 kz750, an 81 or 82 CSR 1000, and an 82 or 83 1100 LTD.
Here's a couple of pics. should be alright for size!

So first on the list was to get er unseized. Not sure which cylinder was stuck. But there was no spark plug in hole # 2, and hole # 3 had a seized spark plug.
After several different attempts with penetrating oils and heat etc. We managed to snap off the seized plug! PERFECT !! But that's for later.
So after I got the plug out, I applied a number of different suggested penetrants and heat to break er loose. In the process I read somewhere, to turn over the motor I should put a wrench on the 17mm nut on the ignition side of the motor. I was somewhat leery, so I put a short wrench on it for less torque. It doesn't take much to break this bolt. Don't ask me how I know!
I also tried breaking the engine loose using the back wheel on the center stand. In the end I dragged the bike back and forth over a rough patch of cement in my shop and Eureka it broke loose!
By the way, Drilling out the broken bolt on the ignition side was a bitch!

Do you have left handed drill bits? Most of the time (but not always) the remains of the bolt will unscrew before you go all the way through.
We recently had to drill out a dozen stuck case cover screws on the 78' KL 250. With the left handed bits every one them unscrewed just before the head popped off. A few months ago we had to drill a case cover screw all the way out on the 80' Suzuki GS 1100E. It was in a spot that couldn't be repaired with a Helicoil. It took 1 1/2 hours to get it out with no thread damage.

Welcome! Pretty bike; looks like it's more or less all there. Getting it to run is certainly the right first step. Just my 2c, a good second step might be disposing of that fairing...

If you plan on a lot of highway speed riding or taking any trips on the bike, you might just fall in love with that old Vetter fairing. It is a heavy beast, but is very well suited to its purpose. In cold or rainy weather, it will make a bigger difference than you might imagine.
