I installed the head after fixing the rocking motion I felt the first time the cylinders went on. The lower idler had rotated some and the rubber bumpers were up. Fixed that. The head went on with a little drama, one of the shims was out of place and broke as I tightened it down, I should have just left them out and put them in later. Now I have to find the valve adjustment tool I bought to set the valves properly. They all show about 0.005" right now. Timing went pretty easy, easier than I expected. Since I've never done a Z1 I don't really know what to expect. Onward and upward.

I got the valves adjusted and started to get the Dynamo assembled.. I discovered something I missed earlier, my wires on the stator were abraded through the insulation on two wires where they are close to the rotor, the previous owner must not have been very careful. I ordered a new one just in case, I’ll also see if I can come up with a repair.

That's tricky. Anything you put over the exposed wire could come off and wander around the sump. The stator is exposed to oil, so whatever it is would need to be compatible with the oil and survive the oil temperature of an air cooled engine.
It looks like the factory put some covering over the joint where the yellow wire is attached to the enameled wire. You could open that up and solder a new wire in place, but I don't know what that material is or where you could find it.
The safest thing would be to replace it. But that's not cheap.

Here is the damaged stator wire, still deciding what I want to do, I have a new grommet.

I used ultra black silicon to seal the wires. It works great.

Steve just curious. I see all your electric parts are on the left side of your bike, did you do that or was it the former owner or is it normal for a Z1B in the US ?
Because i am working on the electric parts of my bike at the moment and all the parts are on the right side of my bike, a Z1B 1975 europe.

It looks like some of the conductors are also broken, is it an option to get the stator "re-wound" as opposed to the cost of new (this is after all the heart of your electrical system)

The below is an example from a uk company (I know that's not much help to you but gives a price indication)

No my bike was ruined in 86 in the wreck. I bought a frame but was ripped off. It's a KZ900 frame so I used the parts from the wrecked KZ900 I had on hand. It will never be stock again. It's mine and I'm doing all the mods I want now making it faster, more stable and going with Mag's off a KZ750G to customize how I always wanted it to be.
The frame is thicker and I'm adding gussets to stiffen up the frame. Went with a 98 KZP swing arm that is 1 1/2" longer and stronger than stock. NO MORE WOBBLES.
In your case it looks like the wires were barely touched. I'd solder the bare parts, test the windings for shorts against the case and if good clean and coat the wires then put it back together.
Keep us posted on your progress.
Steve

Actually, most of the electric stuff is under the right side cover, this switched to the left side on later models. The left side cover on a Z1 covers the chain oil tank.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I think it's fixable. I wouldn't cut the wires. Just try to patch the exposed sections with a liquid plastic. Or maybe buy some heat shrink insulator tubes, cut them and place them over the exposed sections and shrink them.
If you decide to buy a used one let me know. I have a couple that came from Z1B's. Same make and model.
