First KZ project…. 1980 KZ1000 was created by JOE MKII
I have been reading through a lot of the project threads here…Really good stuff and some fantastic projects!

I just started a KZ1000 project myself, first KZ I have ever worked on.
It will be relatively boring. One of the tranny bearings was toast so I have got the engine out and will spit the cases redo the trans and rebuild the carbs , tune up, clean up and I hope to be riding it sometime next summer!
I received two motorcycles when my good friend and cousin passed away a few years back . This KZ and a custom H2 750. I finished the H2 although it will be an ongoing work, and now I am on to the KZ.
This one will be 99% stock and will hopefully live a mundane street life for years to come.
A lot of GREAT info on the site, I have already learned much!!
Anyone with experience with Robinson Transmissions ??
I may send this one out to be looked over and rebuilt by them.
And I have to say Im getting old almost killed myself getting this engine out AND I had help….Age, the great equalizer
Here are some random pics;

You can split the cases without removing the top end. Just be sure you get ALL the #6 bolts and the few crank bolts you can get to.
Nice bike. B)

Hoping the cases will be split by the end of the weekend so I can get a better assessment of all the damage, which seems very light at tho point.

Question
Block off plates for the smog plumbing, good, bad, I assume theres no problem deleting the smog stuff if I want??

That's a beaut!

I have a lot of parts from 80E2 shafty that would fit that bike. The front end is cashed, but a full refreshed MKII motor, brakes etc are available. R

There are various methods to get rid of the air injection system. Done right and there is no ill effect to the bike. When I did my 750 I threaded and plugged off the ports in the head, and I bought a Turbo 750 valve cover which doesn't have the reed valves. I'm not sure what the cover options are for the big KZ's though.

Good luck and have fun with your project. Oh, and thanks in advance for the photos.

At this point I am really hoping to just do the tranny. The bike is in near mint condition cosmetically, so with nay luck just a good refresh of all the fluids, tune up, and clean up and all will be good, but one never knows.

I can get block off plates easy enough so thats what I am going to do.

I have been looking for a factory service manual for this bike and I am confused, theres a lot of them out there but none seem specific to the 1980 KZ1000 A4 / MKII. I am not opposed to the downloaded ones but I do prefer a actual manual.

Any advice on factory service manuals would be appreciated, and I did search the site but Im still confused

Also I believe I am missing this piece of the air box, I know the bike ran well in the past as it is but i am looking for advice..Replace or leave it out. I know all the trouble jetting can be without a complete air box,I have done A LOT of jetting with pods, some of it actually succefuly  I am going to be using the air box that attaches to the carbs for sure so its just the air intake that would be missing.

There's a supplement for the mkII out there, not a full manual if I remember correctly.

The air box silencer is almost never with the bike, most people ditched them when they pulled the battery out for storage, or because they didn't want to hassle with them.

You'll be fine without it, if you find one you can put it on later, they don't come up often, and you'll be lucky to find one for $100.
