I gotta know what section you found that in. Was it stuffed in between some pairs of rollerblades or what? Next time Brandy asks, I'm all in for the Goodwill trip. Maybe I'll find pair of Z1 sidecovers, or not. That is officially the last place I'd expect to find a Z1R part. You know some poor guy in Thousand Oaks will be pissed at his wife when he finds out that she donated his box of Z1R parts while cleaning up the garage.

 Yeah Josh, this unobtanium dash was parked on a shelf between some welded MK2 cranks and a box of 29 smoothbores :P

The truth is, I was peer pressured by one (or 2) Z1R owners into replicating the factory Z1R dash out of composite. Aprearantly, this part is NLA, and is nearly impossible to find used; even then with damage or repairs of varying quality. Even then people think they're worth their weight in gold  I'm just trying to do my part to help the cause B) I should start a new thread for this part, as there are some added complexities that I have not covered in my other threads.

I finished covering the flange with special, high tech mold release agent, AKA packaging tape :P and filleted all the edges. Leon, I'm sorry, but I am not going to be able to save the steps for the gauge isolators. The tach side on this dash is not symetrical due to a previous repair, so it did not make sense to take the time to preserve it when I couldn't make a clean duplicate of the stock dimensions.

Now the plug is ready for a handful of PVA coats. The weather is nice today.....a good day to make a mold :)

Adam's pictures require the most context to understand. If an alien were looking at this thread, he would think, "Well we might as well move on. No intelligent life here. Honestly, they are looking at pictures of used TP. How did these idiots get put in charge of such a beautiful planet?"

Nice little covert operation you fellas have going on here. I was going to ask Mr. Porchev where his progress pics were until I saw this. :) Goodwill.

Yeah, the Goodwill joke popped in my head after Leon confided that Z1R dashes area as scarce as hens teeth, and he'd been looking for years without finding a decent one. How funny to find a rare motorcycle part at Goodwill :P I have to say, that tool coat pic looks much stranger than the actual mold looks. The light from the flash reflects off not just the smooth surface of the epoxy, but also the graphite powder mixed in. Makes is look kinds swirly and blotchy

Relax Leon, I'm not taking a break from the mold. I snap a pic here and there, but I just spent 45 minutes cutting up fiberglass cloth while waiting for the tooling coat to tack up enough. I will get the primary mold made today, but I won't be able to demold it until tomorrow. Then I have to make molds of the ear mounts, the indicator light box and the ignition lock boss. Then I can clean up the oem piece and send it back to Les. No more pics for a few hours while I work, OK Leon?

Short update:

Now Leon, before you get your skirt in a ruffle, I had to mix up some more resin, and I snapped this interlaminate pic. There's about 8 layers of 4oz and about 3 layers of 7.5oz fiberglass cloth. I'd use chopped strand mat as well, but epoxy resin does not disolve the binders holding the strands together, so it's a bitch to get it to lay down

Another handfull of layers of the 7.5oz cloth on the wings and around the flange, and I'll set it out in the sun to cure it a bit faster.

On a side note, I'm using the same resin to make this mold as I used to make my prototype tank (loooong pot life, but VERY thick), and WOW does this crap suck to whet out the cloth!!! I'm very suprised that first tank turned out as well as it did :S
