great intro indeed...lots of pics and good shots of the important stuff....
Sometimes if a guy can get the project running (like your complete ltd bike)and then start a build thread....then focus on each fix/repair/improvement...then it pays off having the bike running he can have a failsafe...a control to test what has improved awhat wire did not get re-hooked and oh there it is ...now it starts...cause when a bike is all the way tore down at once...too many little things like one wire are hard to trace again..little work..little ride...ect...also the more you work on that one bike the wiring and little boogers become set in your memory...i have two that run and 4 that need too...guess which ones i'm more motivated to do the next step on...the running ones...even if it smokes thats only rings or valves or maybe even something simpler...that can be done in the frame...then when you got your new style all chosen you got a good base to modify off...
just my opinion..
i can take the older Z-1 and Kz apart and back together in a day(but dont)....but the J-models i have not worked on so i really dont know where stuff routes and other stuff like how my instrument panel will all go back to looking like yours does now....my J-model came in boxes as a roller...
anyways welcome
the older kz looks to be all there mostly too...
better not get started it's a disease...just leave em like they are and save yourself
welcome

Looks like you have a good start to a couple of projects. I believe that the bracing in question is factory on the J model or 1981+ bikes. I wish that I had pictures of my 1982 CSR, it's almost the same bike, but I gave up on that one.

Thanks for the encouraging words gentlemen, I'm sure I'll need alot more before I'm through. And it's too late for me not to get hooked on these, I'm already hopelessly addicted to these old bikes.
I think the idea of focusing on getting the LTD running and rideable is a good bet, then I can tinker and change stuff up at my leisure (and when I can sneak a few dollars into the budget!)
Fortunately, I have some great local talent available, and of course all of you here to rely on.
What a great community this is! I promise to keep everyone posted.

Was reading your thread and thought that maybe someone in Terry Lee's family would like the artwork Tank? Just a possibility.
The frame bracing is all factory, the 2 tabs in the front on the down tubes are where the Vetter fairing bracket attaches. I've got the same LTD, and a A2 Shaft 1100 from 82. Great bikes, although the suspension is a bit lagging on the LTD. The A2 is much better for suspension, all air, not just the front.

i don't believe that there is enough crazy lady tank art out there nowadays.
shoot when i was a kid that was the only place that i saw naked women were on my dads buddies gas tanks.
like when they used to take a picture out of a magazine and put it on a tank and then clear over it.
great story about your neighbor.
i have always wanted to take a bike like yours and build a new rear subframe that would hold the earlier mnodel kz seat side covers and tailpiece like you spoke of.
can't wait to follow along as you get the projects going.

banshee great idea too...the csr/ltd's show up with low miles and cleaner than most of the standards and there seem to more around.....low miles cleaner...perfect for hybrids..if there were build threads showing a tight process to duck-tail and cut down cafe seat em without goofing the thing...that may be a whole new avenue for build donors..lot of them around....
i was looking at your other red kz ....it is not far from tossing together too...may even rival the LTD for attention

Well RunDog 16 went by so long ago... Let's just say the original Van Halen hadn't broke up yet. However I am motivated to get both up and going. The wife said I need a hobby, and to get out of the house more! OK :woohoo:

Well I thought I would clean her up a bit today. Amazing what some gunk and a toothbrush can accomplish...

Pulled the carbs and the airbox off her for inspection / cleaning. Drained the turpentine out of the bowls and craked one open to have a look. Actually not as funky inside as I thought they would be, but will go through them for good measure anyways.

So I had the rear cowl off of the 77 just lying there and I thought what would it look like on the LTD? After seeing it I will have to figure out a way to attach. Actually it doesn't look like a terrible amount of fab work. Some brackets and the passenger helmet lock will have to go...That and the rear fender.
What do you guys think?
