Makes me think though, I had an ELR with aftermarket Mikuni 33mm smoothbores, that thing was a pig in traffic, I am wonderring if the rails, and all the heat had something to do with it.
It may just have been the vm33's. they are a little big for a 1000 cc motor even a 1100 will struggle with them. the large throat provides a week vacuum signal at low rpm's, there for they can be finicky if u are too quick opening the throttle while the rpm's are down.
I have a set of them. i run rs34's now. the rs34's feel like the vm33's if i unhook the accelerator pump. They go lean if u whack the throttle down low in the rpm's. Then they take off like a bat out of hell. If u could find a pump for the vm’s they would be awesome.
As for drilling the carb plates, they used to drill the cyl fins to improve cooling ..
I drilled my fins too.

Hey, by the way, "heat shields" are made from much lighter stuff. I'm going by a buddies place tomorrow and I'll try to remember to take my camera and ask him what his shield is made of, but it's nost plate metal. The Yosh ones were made of that white opaque plastic-stuff (durlen?...surlen?...I dunno), anyway, it was pretty 'bendy' (is that a word?) but it had been molded to fit up and over the back of the head and then again down under the carbs.

This weekend I put the front end on for the last time, been struggling with how to get a decent steering stop put on the bike. Now it's on. soon a finished product will be born.
We brazed a stop on the neck prior to powder coating, put the front end on and bam, a miscalculation. Lots of trial and error with this stuff. Not like building a Harley, or a small block Chevy engine. Hey you know if you pay extra for shipping most UPS guys can build that Small Block chevy while driving the brown truck!!
So I needed a little bit less lock to lock travel or the forks would be slammin me brand new tank which was EXPENSIVE.
I just started some recreational machining and before long had carved out a urethane part which serves as both a pad and the adapter the bike needed.
So if you are struggling with the same thing, maybe this will give you an idea. I get lots of ideas looking at the work on this forum, so share and share alike!!

Oh Crap...
I knew one of you guys would notice that.
A good friend machined the steering stop for the frame, I marked the left and right with a center punch, so he could braze the new part on the neck. I dunno if it moved while getting brazed, or i marked it wrong, but it ended up a little off center.
Jeeeezze tough crowd:laugh:
Good eye!! Thanks for the compliment.
