Home Upgrade Project...
30 Jan 2023 18:53 - 30 Jan 2023 18:57
Bought me a new toy: a Taiwan built TD-1236 lathe. Low mileage, built in 1994, and well taken care of.
First task: get it home! I've never moved a 1000 lb hunk of machinery before, so it was a new experience, and not without a large amount of trepidation...
Next, get a proper power run out to the garage. My garage power was extremely sketchy, and needed to be redone regardless, but the lathe purchase forced the issue, so I took the "opportunity" to run 240V power out to the garage. Never done a project like this, and winter rain threw a wrench into the works (and filled up my trench!)
Currently I'm in the "install DRO" phase of the project. Another new experience. And I need to make a back splash guard, before the unit can be placed against the wall in the garage.
I'm looking forward to making chips here fairly soon.

Congratulations!
That is a decent machine!
Adding the DRO (Digital Read Out) at the outset, is wise, and will contribute much to the quality and success of your projects.

Add a key-less chuck (for the tail-stock) to your list of "must have" tooling...

Is this going to a ground rod? If so it should be copper going to the sub panel. Nice machine.

Re: Home Upgrade Project...
31 Jan 2023 07:54That's a leftover section of 1" PVC, used to house the underground wires.
For grounding, I drove 8' galvan copper ground rods, one at the new garage sub-panel, and a second by the main panel in the house. The house wiring is old, before a dedicated ground was part of code, so all the grounds are tied to neutral

When I did the addition at the Kornfeld's I had to move the panel and upgrade to 200 AMP. When I opened the old 100 AMP Push Matic panel I found the neutral fried in half and the stucco support wires fried around the box. Scary part about it they had a swimming pool and the whole house was operating on the ground. Old style Romex with aluminum ground wires. That was a spooky one.

Since you have the trench dug, use PVC Pipe underground with well made up joints to keep ground water out. You’ll need an equipment bond as well as a ground wire.
Unless you plan on welding, #8 copper and a 40 amp 2 pole breaker for the sub panel is plenty.

Yeah, I used underground rated PVC pipe to house 6g copper wire. The house breaker is 50A, but I used 40A in the new sub-panel. The in-garage wire, from the panel to the outlet, is 8g. While I was at it, I also ran a new 120V line to the side of the garage without power. The garage needs more lighting, so that may be the next project.
