The above pic was when I first started on her after sitting for 15 years.











While other guys are stripping down their bikes, I seem to be going the other way. I want to travel, just point my head light and go. A place for my gear and tools, a place for her to ride if I get "lucky", just enjoy the time I have left to ride.
With all the add ones, she'll still walk away from most out there and cruse like a stocker.
Whatever floats your boat.

No, you have to drill for the key on the KZ or cut out a piece for the lock lever on the Z1. The Z1R had a piece that rotated up for the key. Cool but on the Z1 it was in the way. I haven't decided what I want to do there.

I've considered this myself since you can get all the factory style prepainted bodywork for the z1's for relatively good prices.

By the time you pay someone to do that paint right, and factor that you are getting a complete new set of "tins", the price really isn't tooooooo bad.

The only different between my kz1000A and the z1 as far as I can tell is the side covers.

My guess is if you have the side covers, fabbing up a few tabs wouldn't be too tough.

The tail section is semi squared as well as the tail light. The front forks have the reflector as well as the rear shocks. They're junk so I will get some duel rate ones and put the reflector casing on them. In the 80's the squared look was the thing. I hate it. Cars, trucks, bikes all had this affliction. Those were the days of 55 MPH and spedo's with 80 MPH tops. Damn liberals, I hear the EPA is being neutered, about time. Save your trees, whales etc. but leave my bike alone.

well guys i broke down and ended up buying a left side z1 engine mount, believe it or not there were only a couple mounts and all were left hand side. Used it as a template and made another one for the opposite side. Turned out fantastic and all the holes line up perfectly.

Might consider some extra security:




Another option -- see following illustration -- is a hitch-pin clip fitted after the side-cover is fitted in its normal position snapped into the grommets (but which I found more difficult to remove and replace due to limited access).

This is how I did mine. Only on of the "studs" on each cover...just as a back up. I've lost one before too. :(

Well guys were making progress. new fabbed motor mounts turned out great. the left side fits great, the tabs on the kz1000 frame may be just a scosh off but it pushes on and looks good. First thought I have though is that it appears that the key latch mechanism is farther in on the z1 frame... The right side needs the rear tab relocated to match the other side. Next problem I see with this is that the rear master cylinder will not fit behind the z1 sidecover. :angry: I suppose this is due to the z1 having a drum rear brake. A set of rear sets with a relocated master cylinder should solve this dilema. Contacted american classix and they are out of tarozzi rear sets. Anybody have a good lead on a set for a kz1000 with disc?

The bolt on Tarrozi rear sets use the stock master cylinder location, so you will have to fab a bracket to hold a MC, if you dont want it under the sidecover; or you could just notch the sidecover, because its along the bottom you wont notice much.

You can't see it in the pictures but this frame is a bit of a hack job. It was originally intended to be somewhat of a drag bike. The frame is braced(some of them welded poorly and need attention) and a few things cut off that were not deemed necessary. Unfortunately the two things that should have not been removed were the master cylinder mounts and the mount for the rear brake pedal/swivel. After seeing the tarozzi's they look like they will a perfect remedy with a master cylinder mounted along the back of the frame
