z1 side cover swap was created by jordan
Hey everyone im back from the dead! quick question for you all. I have a buddy who is looking to put z1 side covers on his kz900. Do they fit easily if you cut and relocate the tabs? I was assuming the frame around the side cover area was similair on a z1.

Have to make/or buy z1 rear motor mounts for the front tabs, then consider none of the other tabs are likely in the perfect spot, but may be close; then you need a different airbox or *gasp* pods.

Z1 rear motor mounts go for decent coin on ebay though. You also may need to figure a way to mount the bracket for the battery box, i know on 1000s thats part of the motor mount

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationThank you very much for the reply, I was unaware that the rear motor mounts were one of the mounting tabs on a z1! Is the motor mount a side cover mounting tab on both the left and right sides? I found this online but it looks like just the LH side has provisions for a side cover?

Yeah both sides are side cover mounts, last set i saw on ebay went for $40-$50. I had a right side and made my left side from some plain kz1000 ones,

I'm planning on doing this swap on my 1978 1000 too once I get some other things out of the way first. You say you made your left side mount from the stock one? could you have done that with the right side as well? This post caught my eye since it's a problem that I will need to solve sometime. It's gonna be -5 here tonight though so I'm trying to solve it on the computer not in the garage!

Why would he want Z1 side covers unless they look better with "Gasp" pods? They do fit around them nicely.

Did the other side, just a triangle piece of 1/8" plate and a piece of 16 gauge with a 5/16" or so offset and a 5/8" hole in it, next to it is the z1 item, notice there isnt a bracket for the battery box to mount to on it

The offset is there to clear the side cover. On the 80 ltd the left side kind of mounts up ( the seat lock is kind of blocked though), the rear mount on the right side rear mount needed re-located, so on one side, two mounts line up and you need to fab the third or waste z1 parts; and the other side one mount is there. So half the mounting tabs are close enough

I used to have 2/1 pods on my Z1. The lines flowed well with the stock covers but I didn't like the empty space below them and you could see the bottom of the battery. I always liked the Z1R side covers and how they covered so I bought some used and adapted them to my bike. There was no place for the bottom tang. One very windy day one flew off. I didn't notice it until I got home. I was mad enough to chew "Neutronium". I bought a aftermarket one but the they weren't exactly the same. You can see the screw heads but WTF, better than nothing. The other side was stolen while I was in a Pizza joint waiting for my son to get off the bus. I almost caught the little PUKE that took it and I know who he is. I have the patience of an oyster and one day he will fall down a lot. That is if he stays out of jail long enough.
The aftermarket covers won't blow off like the stock ones and I've learned to like them for that reason.
Steve

Ok, so if you can get the side covers on do the seat locks line up?
