Seat was created by bromz
Hey guys I was thinking of recovering my seat on my 81 csr1000. Anyone have any pics of what they have done or what guys usually do? Looking for ideas

The enormous king/queen look on the CSR is a bit much for me personally, but the foam should still be good. If you don't want to get too crazy you can trim down the foam on the stock pan using an angle grinder with a flap wheel.
I just made my first fully custom seat. It was pretty time consuming but it turned out great.

That seat looks great. I'm just concerned anything similar and I will miss that hump in the middle that I rest against. Anyone have any pics of one with the rear seat trimmed down a little and recovered without the stitched lines across the seat?

Some of the Standard models from the 1980s aren't as flat as the earlier models.
KZ1000-J, GPz 1100s, & 80-82 KZ750-E are some examples. photos available in the KZR gallery.

DimeCityCycles has a selection of seats in various shapes.
There are a couple that aren't too bad.

J models, gpzs etc have kind of similar seats, here's my 81 kz1000j, of course, I never could find a seat pan, so I welded that up then made the foam and the cover as well

Here's a 750E. I was thinking that the 1000J & GPz were similar --- maybe not, though.

An 1100. Not sure exactly what year or model it is or whether or not the seat is stock. ???

The GPz750 R1 ,z750 L and 1100 Gpz R J seats seem very similar in size all around except for the different seat mountings. I am debating modifying a 750 seat on my 1000R,

The kz750e is rather different with side hinged mountings and more stepped profile.

The pic shows an original z1100R seat, really radical shape and something often copied but rarely just right.
Something about kawasaki's attention to detail is how the good bodywork and seats looked on most models, the ELR in poarticular. imo

Bromz if you want that factory look you might be better sourcing a decent shape seat complete; pattern covers are rarely exactly the same, even when fitted just right.

1980 Gpz550 D1, 1981 GPz550 D1. 1982 GPz750R1. 1983 z1000R R2. all four aces

I'm not looking for the factory look. I would like something a little more sleek. Maybe trim the rear seat down an inch( hardly ever have the wife with) and get rid of the cross stitching and just some piping around the edge maybe. Just need to find something close to reference.

Maybe something like this? Doable with stock pan? Minus the sissy bar.

definitely doable with the stock pan. you wont have to remove much to get that shape. are going to sew your own cover?

Prob not. I work at a place that has a furniture shop and I think I can get one of them guys to do it on the side. Not sure what he will charge but they do top notch work.

cool, i would think about how your foam shape will determine the covers seams, and use that to shape your foam. I used a angle grinder with a 40grit flap wheel to shape my foam, followed by a orbital sander with a 60 grit to smooth it out. Big thing is to make long passes with the angle grinder, and don't try and remove to much material at once, otherwise it will want to bite. good luck.
