78 kaw 1000, ltd Rear break pads changeout request

Hello. New to the forum. 78 kaw 1000 ltd.
Need help or info on changing the rear pads.
I searched the forum and was not able to key in on any specifics for this bike. Thanks for any help. Note..this rear caliper type does not have the "access plate ",, aka. ,, older style caliper maybe.
The Clymer book only mentions the older style caliper.

Your rear caliper looks very much like the one on my KZ650-C1 (see image below). To change pads the rear wheel must be removed. With that out of the way the rear disk is out of the way and changing pads is pretty easy. Ed

Appreciate you reaching out. This new 78 bike has rear brake noise. slight Screeching during braking and also without braking....
The rotor is shiny. The pads are marginal and not in the red zone.
(I can only see the left pad from the rear of the bike facing fwd.)

Any thoughts on the brake noise ??

Darn, So, For a. 78 kawasaki ltd, Back wheel must be removed to access/ replace the rear pads - correct?

And any real benefit with deglazing the shiny Rear rotor ?
Ie, light sanding.

You might try roughing them up a little. Back in the day we use to cut an X in the pucks to stop the squeaks. That was for organic pads. I suggest you get some sintered pads. Not ceramic, they wear the rotors too fast.

Ordered the. EBC . FA37, an organic pad, claims less noise and rotor galling/ribbing according to the Dennis Kirk / EBC site details.

I’ve owned my 1977 KZ650 since it was new. Over the past 62,000 miles I have changed the pads a couple times. One thing I found on my bike is that aftermarket pads tend to squeal, but original Kawasaki pads don’t. I had tried using anti-squeal on the back of the pads, but that didn’t help much. One way I found to reduce or eliminate squeal on aftermarket pads was to file a bit of a small chamfer abound the edges of the pads. This helped quite a bit, but using original Kawasaki pads was the best solution for me. Ed

When I installed new after-market front pads on my '73 Z1 (single disc) and '76 KZ900 LTD (dual discs), front brake application produced a horribly loud and embarrassing high-pitched squeal, which squealing was completely eliminated by removing the pads and applying high temp copper sealant to the backsides of the pads before re-installing them, and allowing the sealant to thoroughly dry before again riding the bikes. This remedy seems to last a long time, and hopefully throughout life of the pads.



The standard automotive type anti-squeal products which I previously tried did not reduce the squealing.

That's good info! The stuff I used was different than what you used; I used generic stuff sold by the auto parts store. Obviously yours worked MUCH better and is well worth using. Ed

The copper is good stuff. I use it all the time. B)
BTW, When flat the anti rattle springs wouldn't stay in place I used it to keep them in place so I could put them together. If it helped eliminate the squeal, all the better. :lol:
