1976 A4 Rear Swing Arm Help

I removed the swing arm form my A4. I want to do the roller bearing upgrade after powder coating. I easily removed the caps and bronze sleeves but can't get the center spacer out nor the bushing out. Items 6 and 7 on the included screen shot

You'll have to work on the lip on #6 using a flat punch prying it out a little at a time. Once out you can drive the other side out with a socket against the spacer.

SWest, got a plan "B"??? The outer flange broke off of the #6 items. Can they be pressed out using the center spacer if I find a socket or bar stock the right size. My son has an arbor press. Is the center spacer #7 sought enough to push out the #6 bushing

They can be a bear to get out. You might start by removing the grease fitting (#15) and filling the tube with a good penetrating oil. Lots of guys (including me) swear by a 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone. I've always been able to to catch the inside edge of the bushing (#6) with a long tapered drift punch and drive them out from the opposite side. Good Luck.

Before you hammer away, put a little heat on it !!! You cannot work on an old bike without the blue tip wrench

Thanks for the heat advise but I'd think that would work against you. The bronze will heat and expand at a lower temp the the steel locking it tighter. Or am I thinking backwards?

You already have the bronze out right?

Hello Mikaw

As MZD1rider say, the magic mechanic fluid ( 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone ) will dissolve all the oxidation and dirt in your swing arm.
Let the magic mechanic fluid penetrating for 48 hours ( don´t let it dry out ), heat is the last chance,( different thermal expansion steel/ bronze ). light shocks with a drift punch every 4 - 8 hour will support the penetrating of the magic mechanic fluid. Some things like this need some time or you will destroy your swing arm!!!

Tried to catch the collar (lip) of the #6 item and it just broke the "lip" off


The center spacer #7 is free. It has enough grease on it to slide freely. It's the collared bushings #6 that won't budge.

The center spacer should be smaller diameter than the collars. You should be able to push the spacer down and use a rod long enough to drive the collar out from the inside.

Steve, if thats true then the swing arm must be bent as the center spacer #7 wont go past the collared #6 bushings. that may explain why the rear tire appears to be shifted to the left. I can slide the center spacer very easily, but it wont go past the collared bushing out either side.
