Fire up the bike.
Meter on DC V
Black probe on negative battery post(metal part of battery.
Red probe on the 1,4 coil positive post(metal terminal on coil not the connector) .
Note voltages firing vs not firing

Move the red probe to the negative post of the coil.
Note voltage when firing vs not firing
Ok, found what I'm going to say was part of my main issue, the ring terminal on the red wire from Dyna box going to 1-4 coil was slipping on the wire, making an intermittent connection. Fixed that, then checked all the terminals on both coils and all connections again. It ran much more consistent after that. The next thing I found was a suspect weak AGM battery. Swapped a good one into it and she's running better than she has in a while. Thanks for the post.

I have #30 going to the starter relay bolt, not direct to battery.  When measured I got same voltage at starter bolt vs battery positive.
Turned key on, with switch in RUN position, 12.07 volts.
Measured #87 to ground and got 11.95 volts.
NOW, I measured power at coils with the negative probe on battery, not negative coil wire.  Measured 11.92 volts.

So, I think I am good, seems like I was measuring voltage wrong the whole time and should have been grounding to battery post not coil wire if that makes sense.

Thanks guys!
Have you had a chance to get back to figuring out the problem with dropping 2 cylinders on your bike? I've got the Wired George relay set up on mine and the last I checked coil voltage was nearly identical to what you're getting. That was with a not so old, suspect AGM battery in it.
I actually found a goofy crimped terminal/wire connection from the Dyna box red wire to the 1-4 coil on my bike. After I fixed that and swapped to a better battery, my bike has been starting, and running great. So far nearly 500 miles since I did that, 200 miler on Sunday. Bike ran great.
I checked and rechecked until I found that bad ring connector. Should be something similar on yours causing the problems. Check all your grounds again. Do you remember what your battery voltage is at 2-3k?

I took another look at all my connections and I'm good there.  The bike is running great now and I haven't had any issues since changing to the green dyna coils.

Glad yours is running good, mine will still fire up on 2 cyl., ever so often. I have not found the issue yet. From everything I have done so far it has gotten much better at not dropping 1-4 coil. I have Dyna III and new green coils. I have another Dyna III box here that I have hidden from myself within the last few weeks that I was going to give a go to see if that was it. I have another pickup plate to try also. That's all I can do next.
How does the 12" meg sound on your bike? Is that a Delevic header?

Hope you get yours sorted out quick, that is extremely annoying!

Header is a Vance and Hines (i'm pretty sure) and I love the 12" cone, sounds great.

Thanks man, you aren't kidding. That is putting it mildly, dribing me insane!
On another note, not saying it's not, but I've never seen a wrap around V&H header for these bikes, Looking back at your pic, it does look chrome instead of SS, like the Delkevic I first thought it was. So that means it could be one of two pipes if it's not a v n h, Kerker, or MAC. Did you make the mid pipe on that header to cone section, or is it part of the original pipe? I know that thing BARKS!!

No points, have Dyna-S.  Changed from points to Dyna about 200 miles ago.

2&3 will come back to life if I'm WOT intermittently.   Usually I baby it back home

dealing with this same situation right now, i'd learned right here at kzr that dyna 3 ohm coils were poorly designed, they will arc to connecting posts.
gonna distance coils further away from bracket n see if that helps.

Good. The relay mode has been removed from the mix. Still need to diagnose the drivability issue. Does spark os 2&3 come back if the bike cools off?

yep that is exactly what mine is doing
