Thanks for the inspiration!
I went back in to adjust the needle. The gauge was indicating speed 5 MPH faster than my GPS unit, which corresponded with the rest position of the needle which WAS above zero by approximately that amount. So I carefully calibrated the gauge based on the speed over ground, as indicated on my GPS.
The needle adjustment was very simple to do.
I prefer the newly unified dashboard appearance, with no GPS.

The 81/82 used 4 separate gauges, the speedometer, gas gauge and tachometer were mounted to a common bracket and the odometer/trip were mounted to a bracket below.
