Starter Slipping ?

Not sure if my stater might be faulty, but when I start my bike depressing the starter button, the engine spins over like it should but appears to slip then sounding like a clutch slipping ?

Bike is a 77' KZ1000A. Bike starts but intermittently will sound like a clutch is slipping when using the electric starter? When this happens, I just stop using the starter button, then try again until the bike starts.

Could be the clutch. Luckily it's easy to get to.

I believe you mean the starter clutch, not the regular clutch. :silly:

Okay Steve, If that's the case, what is involved in repairing or changing it ?

You pull the alternator cover and the sprocket cover. You'll need a puller bolt depending on the year which kind. Do you have a manual? Tou'll need one.

Yes Steve I have a FSM. Have to familiarize myself with the procedure ? Do you know which puller bolt I need to get ?

In your manual it says you can use the steering head bolt to remove the rotor. I have a old one I use but I hammer on it to free it up. You don't want to use your good one for that. I'd check eBay. I think it's 18mm.

Steve, I removed the dynamo cover ( Left Side ) and as shown in the FSM I need a Dynamo Rotor Holder # 57001-152 which Kawasaki doesn't have anymore? What are you guys using to hold the rotor while moving the rotor holding bolt? Are you just putting it in gear to hold it?
Also, the Dynamo Rotor Puller in N/A thru Kawasaki either? I think you mentioned using an 18mm bolt? Z1 Ent. has a Flywheel Puller that may work but will have to see.
There's even a Rubber Damper that Kawasaki doesn't have either if needing replacement.
So just trying to do my Homework before tackling the job. Any Help Again is Greatly Appreciated !!!

I think the last time I did this I was able to start the engine on the center stand, work the tranny up to 5th gear and shut it all off in gear.
Then removed the covers and all that.
I had my wife come out and hold/ depress the rear brake, as hard as she needed to and I used the bolt to pop the rotor off. The engine clutch seemed to hold well enough.
Been so long I can't remember if I needed anything else other then that procedure.

Great Idea, but does the bike need to be in 5th Gear? I can see holding the rear brake would help.

Do you remember what size bolt to remove the rotor?

I've seen the puller bolts on eBay. I straddle the bike with it in gear and hold the brake with my foot while turning the bolt. The one on the steering head works with a ball bearing inside against the crank. Sometimes it will come right off. The bolt is soft metal plus being chrome, it's easy to strip. When it REALLY got me pissed I took a large pipe wrench to the rotor so I could be down there and pound on the bolt. :evil: I've been planning on buying a nice new bolt, the one I have on the bike is old and not pretty anymore. So then I will have two. :whistle:
