I had this posted under another heading but was told I should start a new thread with a different headng. I have a 1976 KZ900 that was running until I took the tank off to fix a leaking #1 carb. When I put the tank back on and tried starting the bike, the main fuse kept blowing. The bike does turn over but will not start. I took the tank off and tried starting the bike and it would not start. I checked for disconnected/broken wires, but could not find any. I have power to the coils and fuel is getting to the carbs. I noticed then that the head light was no longer working either. With the tank on the fuse is no longer blowing. Any have any ideas as to what could be causing these issues ? I suspect that it is in the wiring because I seem to think that the head light and the starting issue started at the same time. I have the coil rewiring done to get battery voltage to the coils. Is it possible that the relay got fried when the fuse was blowing ? Any help would be appreciated.

Might have disturbed connection where red wire to Dyna-S taps into harness for required switched battery positive voltage to Dyna-S.

Dyna-S requires battery voltage in order to function.

Good Fortune! :)

If you're using a Dyna "S", the power connection has been known to go bad, as it actually will cut through the conductor of the wire over time. A solution for it, is to use solder and heat shrink tubing, in place of the supplied 3M "Suitcase" splice.

See if the igntion coils are getting battery voltage, if not, trace back to the run/stop switch on the right handlebar. On the older bikes, the solder connections on this switch may be crumbling, requiring some delicate solder repair. If you've got questions about this repair, just ask, as I've got a repair procedure....

I checked the coils and they are getting battery voltage to them. Could the Dyna ignition gone bad ? Should I try putting the original ignition back on it and see if it starts ? I am open to any suggestions.

Would perform clear tube test on each carb to assure fuel levels are within spec.

OK, I will check that. I just remembered that I left the fuel turned on and most of the fuel in the tank leaked out. Could that have cause fuel to get into the crankcase ? How would the bike react if the crankcase had fuel in it ?

Don't try to run it if you have fuel in the crankcase. Check your oil first. If the oil level is high and it smells of gas, then you need to do an oil change.

Or bent connecting rod(s), as your bike could suffer "Hydraulic Lock", trying to compress a liquid, and bending parts.
