Coil Mod: Why it’s Not a Recommended Solution
I was asked to do a technical write up on this subject matter awhile back and well, just have been lazy I guess, no other excuse.
Unfortunately once again, the Coil Mod has raised its ugly head and thus given me the motivation to getting it done…
I’ll try and not go into in-depth theories of applied science thus boring everyone to death and keep it concise and easy to follow…
Let’s start with this statement….
This is not a personal attack on anyone or any service for as I have researched into it’s conceptual development on the web, this coil mod concept was designed many moons ago back in the 70’s and most likely developed for racing KZ’s where a lot of the electrical system was removed and an ignition switch, lights, turn-signal/hazard relays, brake light switches etc… were no longer required. They only had to get through the race and not for every day street rides.
Now considering these old racings KZ’s also were fitted with large carbs, performance port & polished heads, performance camshafts, 4-1 exhaust etc… Jetting was a PITA between races! Pending elevations, outside temperatures, air densities, internally developed temperatures etc… Carboned fouled plugs during a race not good… With that said, every amount of voltage/current that could be obtained went directly to the coils and ignition components.
Does it work: Yes but not without flaw….

All electrical system charging components, lighting and ignition system (coils, EI modules, points, condenser) operations are to specification, no other way to look at it!...

you know i dont modify stuff much...i prefer em running...the way they were for yrs and yrs...coil mod....oh you mean toal loss ignition...why would i want that unless it was for track days :huh:

coil mod made my bike run noticeably better... and I have zero interest in going through the spaghetti tangle of my wire harness to do it the OMR way only to get the same results.

"spaghetti Tangle"? It's only ONE wire, Red/Yellow in most situations. Two wires if you count the ground from the points. That is the only wire you have to worry about. :dry:

You installed this coil mod due to either low voltage, carboned plugs or a combination of both.. correct?
Yes, in installing the coil mod you now have battery voltage to your coils no doubt, yes...?
But since the rest of your electrical system is terminated to the same original brown conductor off the ignition switch, you most likely are still under rated in your other electrical system components, lighting, and more importantly the feed back to the regulator thus charging system...
That's the point of the article!
Your coils received the desired results but the rest of your system is still suffering and under rated...
And that my friends is why it's deemed a band aid and not truly a repair...
If your going through all the trouble of installing this relay and re-routing conductors, why not do the same regarding new conductors to the ignition switch, kill switch, to the coils... Now the rest of your system is up to spec as well...
Ah well, if you're happy with using the mod, good for you.
