The schematic posted above is an early post on the WG website. Using a relay that has an 87a terminal will result in the terminal being exposed and hot when the ignition is off. The thread 'A minor modification to georges...' goes into more detail The wiring should be switched around to the following:

Oh my, I wish I had of checked this site before I went in the garage tonight. I just came in from wiring it the other way.

So, basically the change is swapping around the 30 and 87 connections?

Thanks for posting this. Looks as if I'll be busy again tomorrow night. Only a small change anyway.

Turns out I never had to cut and solder any wires to fix for that change that macattak pointed out. I was able to just swap the wires in the pig tail. Hope to get the connection to the coils finished tonight and test this weekend.

I've never had any desire to do the mod, but as to the original question, I'd doubt highly doing the mod will change your soot problem.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Please post some photos to show how the wiring is completed if at all possible.

I hear that the coil rewiring mod is supposed to cure the sooty plug problem.

any other cures for the sooty plug problem?

I have no trouble with Start up, usually fires up within an instant of hitting the electric start, and 2 or 3 kicks of the old kicker.

Multimeter shows 12.23 volts at the batery at idle.

What do you gents make of this.

THe only thing I am tying to get fixed is the sooty carbon plugs. Cleaning them is no biggy with a wire brush.

Just want to know if it is worth it or not.

If I do not do the mod, anyone think new plug caps and wires make any difference?

After I get these issues sorted out, I am going to paint her up and add the original deals from Z1.

How many volts do you have at the battery with the engine off? And more importantly, how many volts do you have at the coils with engine off?

If you have less than 11.5-12V at the coils (and you have 12+v at the battery), then you would likely benefit from doing the mod.

Ideally, you want 12+V at the coil with engine off.

KOOL RYDER, sorry for not posting pics yet, I can't seem to find my camera cable. I'll post them as soon as I find it.

Also, I haven't run mine yet since the mod, hope to get it going tomorrow or on the weekend.

Here are a few pics of how I did it. If there are any others you want me to take just let me know.

First is the parts I picked up. I bought some 12 gauge wire but it turns out it's not really necessary. The wire that came with the inline fuse was sufficiently long to connect it.

Here's a pic of where the ground wire will attach. It's on the right hand side of the bike (this is on a '78 650 D1) next to the oil filler hole.

I attached the relay to a piece of metal attached to the battery box. The pic also shows the starter solenoid where the inline fuse wire attaches to power the relay.

The coils on my bike don't have the lugs that are mentioned in the WG tutorial, so I just used the existing wires that go to the coils.
