WG Coil Mod - How hard is it to accomplish?
13 Aug 2008 08:39
I am interested in getting rid of the sooty plug problem.
I have to clean them about every 1000kms and was wondering if the coil mod had any impact on HP or performance?
Is the benifit of the WG coil mod 2 fold, ie power + reducing carbon fouling?
I have reviewed the info on WG website and was thinking about attempting this.

Very easy to do with points or a Dyna S, takes a little more time with factory electronic ignition. Go to wired georges web site and it walks you right thru it

Yes and Yes to both questions, IMHO.
Then I would add the all important RELIABILITY factor, again IMHO.
$10 USD, best bang for the buck on this site.
This is how I did mine, see here:

Best of success and let us know how it turns out.

Awesome pic Bill, thank you very much for posting that.
I just picked up the relay and inline fuse today, so I'm going to get started with this mod tonight or tomorrow. However, I never picked up the "press-in male connector" because I don't know exactly what they are. Anyone have a pic of one of these and the crimp on female lug connectors?

Well, usually the same auto parts shop that sells the relay has the matching connector with pigtail wires. Did you get yours at Canadian Tire? Should be under $2.00 USD and mine looked a lot like this one:
Best of success.

Thanks Bill, but isn't that pic of the pigtail for the relay? I was looking for the "press-in male connector" that WG says is in the parts needed. I picked up my relay (and pigtail) from an auto place just down the road from me.
Is the press-in male connector just a bullet connector? I know everyone has different terms for electical components.
I live in St. John's.

This diagram may help:
Easy mod. Disconnect the battery while doing any electrical work.
The red/yellow wire that powers both coils is the only existing wire your dealing with on the bike.
Unplug the two coil power wires. The feeding red wire with the dual plug from the wiring harness gets attached to lug# 86 with a length of new wire, and then from lug# 87 you run a wire back and to the two coils.
Then it's a new wire from the starter solenoid + wire with an inline fuse to lug# 36 or 30 depending on your relay you bought.
And then a ground wire to lug# 85. I connected this to one of the black/yellow ground wires near the battery's neg terminal.
I did the mod when I had points. I have since switched to a stock late model Kawi electronic Igntion and did not require any changes to the mod.

Sorry, thought you were looking for the relay socket and pigtail. :pinch:
The only other connector I have in mine is a bullet type for which I found one that fits at Canadian Tire... no I don't work for Canadian Tire.
If you want the 100% identical male and or female connectors try here:
At about $5.00 USD, pretty hard to beat the price... for the real thing.
No I don't work for Z1 either.
Best of success.

I am a rookie when it comes to wiring, i have not used a multi meter in years.
Anyways, From what I gather you only need 1 12V relay and that is pretty much it.
Relay, wire, fuse holder and fuse.
Where does the wire from the starter solenoid connect?
Are we talking about the starting motor?
That is pretty much the only grey area I have for now.
Thanks guys.

Where the red battery cable connects to the solenoid. Place your inline fuse between the solenoid and the relay. Unscrew the positive lug and use a connector to attach the inline fuse. Please disconnect the battery.

The trigger wire is yellow/red on most models, red or pink on others. It is never red/yellow as depicted in the drawing in this thread.
