Also check your petcock. A faulty diaphragm in petcock will draw in fuel going to #2. Because it's vacuum is sourced from that cylinder, raw fuel right down the hole..

19 Mar 2025 05:49Yes 17.5 pilots I’ve tried these as someone suggested. They are all genuine Mikuni parts I’m back on the supplied 15’s now ? Rightly or wrongly.
Number fuel height was high…I’m just checking now

Re: 1 Sooty Plug
19 Mar 2025 07:06Well what can I say; just lowering fuel in bowl has gone from mega sooty to this, I’m sure I can make any small adjustments through the air screw now.
Shes still a bugger warming up from cold and needs choke to ride her which as mentioned isn’t ideal as she goes berserk on revs ?

You should start it on full choke. When it's revving high feather the choke off until it's revving about 1500-2000 rpm. It's only ready to ride when it fully warm and ticking over at approx 1000 rpm without any choke. The choke lever is incremental, the higher you lift it the richer the mixture.
There's 3.7 lts of oil in there which is pumped around by a low pressure oil pump. Until all the oil is warmed up it's not warm.
It's not like a modern engine where everything sorts itself out from cold.
You have to do the sorting out for it.

Just couldn’t imagine buying it new and not being able to ride it for 10 mins till she earns up lol. I fully understand the choke as I’m old but doesn’t seem right to take this long to ride off ?

It doesn't take 10 minutes. 2 maybe. In reality when you've feathered the choke so it's revving about 1500-2000 you can ride it normally and after a further minute or two close the choke.
All air cooled engines are the same, they have to be or they'd always be overheating in traffic, at lights etc.
You shouldn't leave them ticking over with no airflow over the cylinders for extended periods either.

There’s no way you could ride mine away it’ll just bog down and die? The choke can be set but within less than a minute they’ll climb sky high…, you close the choke down and again within a minute it’ll start screaming at you ? Any ideas why she does this ?

You might of mentioned buying new intake manifolds, can't remember? Did You just bolt those suckers on or perform a vacuum test with intake valves shut per cylinder?

It's a leak-down test, do it all the time on the two-strokes i rebuild but thru the manifold rubber port. BTW that #2 plug is definitely looking right! Reminiscent of an air leak to me or valves.

If it was an air leak I’d be experiencing a lean mixture not rich.
Anyway below is tonight’s plugs after a 60-70 run home from my local bike meet, airscrews 1-1/2 turns out.
If I could resolve the startup issues I would be happy….inlet manifolds are perfect same as air box rubbers.
