1 Sooty Plug
18 Mar 2025 14:25
I did post this on my other topic but nobody followed up on it so I thought I’d try a new post.
I’ve pulled the carbs 5 times now and checked every orifice of number 2 carb without finding any problems. I swapped the choke plunger over just to rule that out. She runs fantastic once past 1/4 throttle and off the pilot circuit but misses and cuts out at times going from throttle down to low speed, struggles to pull away without giving her loads of gas which isn’t ideal.
just running out of ideas and things to check as mentioned she’s pulls like a train on throttle.
Offending plug shown below.

No1 lean.
No2 weak spark/rich
No3 lean.
No4 OK.
First you need to determine if it's electrical or carburation.
Swop ht caps/leads 2 & 3 over with each other and see if the symptoms moves with the lead.
If it does check you only have max 5 ohms resistance in the line. Cut the ht lead back until you get clean core for ht cap to screw onto. Ensure your not using resistor plugs and caps. Only one or the other max or neither.

Sorry should have said…,
New coils, leads, caps plugs
I’ve swapped HT leads between 2 & 3
Later model electronic ignition fitted
Stock airbox & exhaust
Looking online they suggest too high float level can cause rich running and too low lean, I’ll check number 2 today and see where it falls 👍

Low bowl fuel height will cause a weak mixture and high level will cause a rich mixture, however as you'd said you've had the carbs off numerous times, naively, I'd assumed that you had previously set the bowl fuel heights and bench synced the vacuums as per the factory service manual.
Don't assume that components that are new are good quality, operationally perfect and are all are performing within spec. Especially spark plugs that are ordered from the Internet. There are so many fakes, especially ngk plugs, that only sourcing from reputable dealer would give me any confidence.

I would clean all electrical connections throughout the entire wiring harness.

You’re right I didn’t check float heights 👍 as the other plugs were ok and she runs so good on throttle I never thought too much fuel in the bowl could cause an issue. I’ll check number 2 with the clear pipe and if it’s high I’ll obviously adjust it lol
Wiring is all new on the ignition side 👍

Some crap for your venture and consideration. I checked back thru your original posts, seems at one point All plugs looked correct. So only after fiddling something went crazy and now #2 is fouling. Is that correct?

I’ve had several issues with her from her starting ok then taking forever before I could pull away unless she’s on choke and then she screams her nuts off at 6k which is most annoying lol.
I’ve had cold cylinder upon starting on number 3 then eventually it’ll kick in and she’s ok.
i don’t think she’s ever been right since owning her I’ll check the float height on number 2 as planned and report back. As far as I’m aware I’ve never miss handled the carbs to cause the floats to be altered.
Least the suns out ☀️

Without looking back, which version of these carbs do You have? Air screw, fuel screw or the pumper version? You'd from memory, something about a missing oring? Which one, emulsion/jet holder or air screw/fuel screw ones?

Air screw at the top 👍 pumper carbs fitted
i “did” misplace the O ring but found it before trying so that’s all sorted . As another test I blanked off the pumper injector passage to number 2 but this didn’t make any difference lol 😜

OK, thanks for the info. Just FYI, those carbs are set-up for a functional "pumper/accel" system, lacking it, you'll never have proper off throttle response. Remember somewhere you'd mentioned a "#17" pilot jet? Mikuni didn't make a 17, only a 17.5. And they differ from the pedestrian 17.5's used on other VM carbs. They are 92064-1018 Kawasaki part number but..really a VM22/210-15 Mikuni bit. These are the "bleed" type, meaning holes in collar portion. The other KZ pilots are N151.067 Non bleed and BS30/96 Bleed. Have to remember Kawasaki NEVER made carbs, Mikuni did for these models.
Where did You purchase Your parts from?
