Rich running problem

I live in NC and ride in the mountains. I havent rode for long period of times at high elevation before yesterday but my bike started running super rich and sounded weird. It sounded like a v twin. It also had no power. When i finally got down from the mountain and was at my normal operating elevation about half a minute later it was running perfectly normal. I know at my regular elevation its running rich but not crazy rich. It has the stock air box deleted and so its running a little rich to compensate. Exactly how rich should it be running? Like what exactly should the plugs look like? The plugs look the same through the whole rpm range

Not trying to be a smartass but sounds like it may have been running on only 2 cylinders.

If not already done, would perform clear tube test on each carb to assure the fuel levels are correct, and especially not too high which could likely result in an overly rich mixture.

Sometimes, a leaner pilot circuit improves performance at higher elevations.

Good Fortune! :)

Yes i will do that and clean my plugs off. Im also going to check my timing advance mechanism. After i clean the plugs and check the height of the gas level im going to mess with the fuel/air screw and try to lean it out a little. And yes it could have been running on two cylinders. If thats so, thats very bad for the engine.

Would go to KZr's HOME page and download the Factory Service Manual which is an essential and invaluable resource toward maintaining and caring for these old girls, and which includes a multitude of specifications and measuring techniques for most of the components and systems of the motorcycle, including details about coil resistance, etc.

Good Fortune! :)

I dont know. The bike was ridden by my uncle then the frame disassembled then i got it put it together and it was running great. Ive put 600 miles on it. Then all of a sudden on a hour long trip from sc to nc it was running like shit. I took the carbs off and took the plugs out. The 2 and 3 cylinders are running pretty lean while 1 is a tad lean and 4 is rich

All the floats are at different settings. Im going to reset them and the air screws. Are the 2 and 3 cylinder jets supposed to be smaller then the 1 and 4 since theyre on the inside of the engine like some of the newer bikes?

No, check the valves before going any further.
