To the battery +, a bolt on the frame and around a spark plug wire.

Some models come from the factory with fixed timing that's not owner adjustable. In which case the timing and operation of the advancer may be viewed with a timing light to confirm correctness of timing and proper functioning of the advancer, but without being owner adjustable.

With an ignition that's owner adjustable, such as a points ignition or a Dyna-S electronic ignition, the ignition backing plate would be expected to have slotted holes to allow for adjustment of timing by the owner.

The ignition pictured by SWest is, i believe, a Dyna-S electronic ignition (which perhaps replaced an original points ignition) and has a slotted backing plate which allows owner adjustment.

The ignition at hand might or might not allow for owner adjustment of the timing.

What ignition is the ignition at hand? Points? Dyna-S? Stock igniter style?

Good Fortune! :)

At 1:42 you mention "tightening the springs on the spark advance...walking back and forth."

The Dyna 2000 ignition system replaced the factory spring/weight mechanical advance on my engine. Same with yours?

That "walking back and forth" is likely happening because the adjustable pickups (on the adj. plate) are slightly out of sync to one another. Shouldn't the timing between 1/4 and 2/3 be dead-on identical?

If the springs have slop in them, the timing will walk back and forth.

Your Dyna ignition has springs?

Is it possible to do piston rings with the engine in the frame? Also can i just like move the head to the side while i do the rings so i dont have to split the cases?

You can do rings without splitting the case ..... I did my pistons without but I did remove the motor and rigged it up on a stand so I could remove the oil pan and flush every thing out real good.
