93 KZ1000P Rebuilt Carbs not starting
22 Apr 2016 03:08
Good Morning,
New to the forum while searching the internet to figure why my bike isn't starting.
1993 KZ1000P, last ran about 3 years ago. I took off the carb stack and had it professionally cleaned and rebuilt as the ethanol had caused massive deposits. I had the tank cleaned and put on a new petcock. installed the carbs 2 days ago. Fuel in all 4 bowls. Pulled out a plugged and verified a very strong spark. Pulled choke, no start. Pulled air filter, sprayed alittle carb cleaner in air box and got a cough. battery died, charge battery and came back pressed start button and after forgetting to close choke...little roar, then again nothing. Pulled plug, plug very dry. Tried to start minus one plug and nose over plug hole..no smell of fuel...put finger over hole felt air blow out and air sucking in but dry finger. Bowls still have fuel in them....fuel does not seem to be getting into cylinder. I was thinking stuck intake but won't that cause a world of hurt if a tried to start, like maybe bending valves?
I welcome ideas.
David

I had someone suggest squirting fuel into the cylinder though the airbox with the throttle partially open...so I said, what the heck I will try that.

Momentarily running (combusting) via assistance with starting fluid spray -- but then shutting down -- indicates failure of fuel mixture being received from the carbs. Which usually means imperfectly clean pilot circuits and/or improper cold start procedure (throttle grip should not even be touched during cold start cranking).
The following diagram is an example that might help.
The procedure is to spray cleaner in such a manner that the spray exits through the orifices at top of the carb bore and sprays on into the carb bore
The plug should be secure at bottom of the pilot jet.
The tiny passageway must be clear between the main jet and the pilot jet.
Good Fortune!

As known, the above won't be of much help toward actual cleaning of the pilot circuit.

Thank you Patton. I will probably pull them back off and verify all the passages are clean. That's what I have been thinking for a while, that the fuel is not making it to the pilot screw to mix with the air

What should the initial number of turns be for the pilot screw?
I am also assuming..i know..never assume...that the choke circuit bypasses the jets.
I ended up pulling the carbs back off...I need to see why the fuel isn't getting into the cylinder.

2.5 turns on the pilot screws.

I pulled the carbs back off, checked them, replaced the vacuum lines. I am still not getting fuel into the cylinders.
I read that the airbox needs to be snug, put in the air filter, I assumed that there is not enough suction to draw the fuel into the cylinder.
But still no fuel (i pulled the plug out and hit the starter)...getting frustrated. has to be something simple

The pi;lot jets are very small. I use a guitar string to clear them A strand from a wire brush can work as well.
