Dave the 135 jets might be too fat even for an 1100, unless the engine is heavily modified. The manufactures chart shows 130s for rs 36's. Even after playin around with the jetting i ended up running the stock jetting 115's for my rs 34's and I have a 4 into 1 header a ported head and a bore kit in my engine.

My preference is to employ the stock air box with a set of RS carbs coming my way, but would like to hear some experiences folks have had running them that way, instead of with pods.

If you can use the air box without causing a restriction then that is the way to go.
An air box provides a consistent metered supply of still air with less fluctuation so will make carb set up easier and the general running smoother.

I have 33 CRs on my kz1100
29 mics on my kz 1000
And 34 RS on my 1100 Kat

Dont put the air box on until your in the zone, because they might be going
On and off many times to access needles and pilots
It all comes down to comon sense
Stacks for max performance
Pods keep dirt out easy to remove during tuning
Air box takes effort fitting during tunning ,looks clean but
Not a big advantage over proper large volume KNs
Never put individual filters on CVs ...people
Who do don't understand how CVs work
Even with a dyno you'll only get it within 80% of
The stock air box and stock filter they were designed for

Here's a pic with the bottoms off

After removing the floats and retaining screws, the valves were flopp'n in the bores, and I could lift them out with no resistance at all. They're tight now with good/supple o-rings from an extra set of float valves from the BS34's. Perhaps that explains the fuel overflow which the ebay seller noted in his listing.
Seems to me if the o-rings are no good, then it doesn't matter if the float valves are good...gas will get past the outside of the valve assembly.
