Repro Z1 Airbox on KZ1000A2
13 Oct 2015 11:24 - 13 Oct 2015 11:35
My newly purchased 1978 KZ1000A2 came with a Henry Abe style Bread Box filter, better than pods IMO, but I'd still rather the proper airbox. KZ1000 airboxes are hard to find and expensive, especially when it seems you'd have to buy new rubber manifolds etc. on top of the box cost, which is why I started looking at the Z1 reproduction airboxes. To me they seem like they might flow better as the box opening is so big, many later model bikes have airboxes that have small intakes to reduce noise. Secondly, one of my pet hates with the stock air boxes, based on my KZ650 (so perhaps a Kz1000 is better), is they make it such a bear to get the carbs off for any minor adjustment. The Z1 style looks pretty compact like it could be moved back into the frame space to allow the carbs to come off easily. Could anyone using one confirm this? Also how do they perform? and my other question is about the aesthetics, do they fit well with the side panels etc. the Z1 ones were curved to fit round the runners, do they clear on the Kz1000i's and if so is there an ugly gap left.

Can't help with the air box question but if you don't mind me asking what air box rubbers are you using on your breadbox? Are they the original ones or are they stock Kawasaki intake boots?

I'm sure they are the stock KZ1000 airbox to carb rubbers, they go through inside the "bread box" to act like a velocity stack which is supposed to be beneficial to good running.
The engine side of the carbs is stock too I believe.

It will work. I'd rather have my old one but my 33's wouldn't fit. I used a KZ 900 box instead and used heater hose for the boots.

Thanks, looking at the spacing there I can see it would be like my KZ650 getting the carbs off. Does your heater hose setup push back into the airbox to give you space to get the carbs clear, a friction fit, or are the attached to the airbox?

Cheers, I have a nice condition bread box I want to set up. The old Abe rubbers are all torn up, it ran pretty decent with the crappy pods it had on it so the breadbox should work for now till I find a proper air box.

That looks the same breadbox as mine, if you get some new stock rubber parts you should be good to go. You could also use them if you find a stock airbox as they always seem to be missing or hard as rock.
I took my carbs off this afternoon to check one of the floats and polish them up a little and had a nice surprise in store they are 28mm Mikunis with the accelerator pump, I don't know if they have much advantage over the 26's, but at least I won't be going round wondering if I need to find a set of 28's because my 26's are considered too small by some..

The 28's will be fine up to 1075. Those are not stock boots. Mine apes the stock ones and you can see how long they are.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configuration
On the Abe style bread box the rubbers go inside the airbox almost to the back of it, so they are much longer than what you can see from the outside. One reason I've heard these filters run well is because of this, you have a long entry into the carb like a velocity stack as opposed to a pod filter where the air goes pretty much straight in to the carb, coming from all angles.
Anyone needing a cheap airbox go here OEM and under $4,001 !!!

Re: Repro Z1 Airbox on KZ1000A2

Putting 2&2 together from a conversation I had with a local guy selling bike parts that I got a wheel from, when we were talking Z1's and KZ's, I think this is the guy he knew who tried to sell the whole bike for $20k on ebay, but only got an offer of $12k so decided to break it for parts. Looking at some of the parts listed, it doesn't look like it was a very clean bike at outset so I don't know about the $12k offer being for real or where the numbers came from. If you look at the other parts listed and the prices I can't believe anyone would buy any thing. They are so outrageous it would give the impression there's no point in making a reasonable offer, one look and you'd go elsewhere with your search.
