1980 kz250 idle / choke / adjustment??

Not sure what to name this...
So here we go- finally got the bike running (spark issues) and it runs beautifully. Nice clean sounding bike! Let it idle for a bit and warm up. Then flicked the choke off and bam dead. Bike won't idle with the choke off but it runs rough if I hold a bit of pressure on the throttle.
PO put on a new carb and new cone air filter and new exhaust! All hard to adjust together is what I hear. Anyway- manual is in the mail but any help or points to look for would be great!

Is that even the right carb for the bike?

Was brand new from PO. After 5 min of idling it's black black black.

If it runs with the choke on and dies with it off, it's lean no doubt. Wind IN the idle mixture (pilot) screw at least one turn, but likely it needs a new bigger pilot jet if it's that far off. On that carb, the idle mixture screw is an AIR screw, so wind in clockwise, or in, to richen it. If you get it closer than one turn open then you def. need to go to a bigger idle jet.

....don't know what that carb is for, but it has no business on that motorcycle.

If you can find the correct carb and airbox on ebay, you may have much better luck with it.

I love the warning sticker... "Not for aircraft use"... No kiddin'

It should work fine on that bike, Only thing, the Mikunis for a four stroke have a double tapered needle, the two stroke ones usually have a single taper needle. Just have to work with it a bit to get it right, but it will run good with work.
