Can't sync utter failure

Well got some time to sneak out in the garage to sync my carbs in my 82 550. After warming it up, I fought with my dry rotted vacuum lines for a while, thought I had her go to go. Well I got them so far outta whack that I had to pull them, re bench sync them and try again. Thought I got it this time- nope!!! I can't get an idle lower than 1200 (one of the slides must be that much lower than the rest, holding them all partially open) and she pops when I snap the throttle. Goddamnit. Guess it's off to the store to get new vacuum lines.

I always have this issue - when bench syncing, whereabouts do you guys put your idle knob at? I tried to bottom them all out with some room to back the nut off yet, but obviously I missed the boat.

#3 carb is the lead carb. Set them all to that one.

Ok... What makes #3 different that he's the lead dog? It's been a while since I messed with these like this...forget a lot in 5 years.

If #3 is fixed (no adjustment) it's the lead carb. Adjust everything down to stall, adjust the idle and make all the same as #3. If no lead carb, pick one and do the same thing.

This is a 550. All carbs are same. There is no lead carb.

Set your idle knob in roughly the middle of its range when bench syncing. That will allow you to raise or lower the idle after the carbs are mounted. Ed

The 84 550 LTD shaft had a lead carb. They are TK's. I was sweating bullets thinking the diaphragms were shot. Turned out fine and it ran like a scalded cat. :woohoo:

I think the 84 had diaphragm slides. This ol girl has mechanical slides. I'll pull them tonight, bench sync and try again vac syncing with some decent lines. Mine were pretty crappy.

Those vacuum lines are probably your issue. How are you bench syncing yours? I'm new to syncing carbs and bench synced the CR33's that are on my 1000. I sat them on my dining room table and used the light coming through the window by looking through to adjust them. Ran surprisingly well and much better than they were. I have a set of gauges coming in for the fine tuning. Just have to figure out how to get to vacuum on these suckers since the holders don't have the nipple.

Yes the 84 had CV carbs and you have VM's. You're supposed to set them up with the right size drill bit as a gauge. Mark the one as the lead carb and don't change it. Set the others to it. My 33's didn't have a nipple nor my holders. The PO did this. I wish I could have done it but he was a expert, (just ask him).

I've used a drill bit before. I just set them all roughly equal to each other by going to wot and making them flush with the throat (see loudhvx's) site. Then I rechecked my idle knob was in the mid range of adjustment. Getting new lines after work today.
