Kz1000p carb issues

Hi everyone, first post here but have spent too many hours reading the forums. I have a 1986 kz1000p-5 that I picked up on the cheap, I have spent many months rebuilding the bike from the frame up, not a cop bike anymore. I am now at the point of getting it running and purchased a rebuild kit for the bs34cv carbs. Here is my problem, bike will start with choke on and will only run with choke on. I do not have the boots for the stock airbox so I am using pods, I know there is some tuning issues with pods. I am running a stock motorwith stock exhaust, motor sounds good and runs good with choke only, I have stripped and cleaned carbs 3 times, vacuume caps are tight and still no accleration. Advancer is clean and lubed, have good hot spark, timing is spot on. Main jet 127.5 , pilot jet 37.5 and the needle is set to the 3rd slot. I am beginning to think the needles are not the correct ones, they came with the carbs but look aftermarket, they have a taper in the center and a blunt tip, I have never seen this in any carb I have rebuilt, if I am correct they should have a gradual taper, are 5gn45 needles correct to this bike? I cannot find any at a fair price (less than 25 a piece) anyone have 4 they would like to sell? Would another style needle work? Thanks for any advice.

If you find you need to use the air box you can make boots out of this.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationThis is what I bought for my 33mm Miks. I thought I had the other in my watch list but I can't find it.

Thanks Steve, just purchased some, now I need to figure out the jet needles. I will post a picture of the needles I have, maybe someone will recognize them.

Hi Vince
I am working on the carbs on my 2005 police bike. have you sprayed carb cleaner through all the passages in the carb body? Also there is a weird plug that you stick in the pilot jet hole. Are the idle mixture passages clear? Can you pass a wire through the pilot jets? I use a wire from a wire brush.

Hi Rich, yes all passages clear, new jets, and plugs over pilot jets have new o-rings. I looked over the old jets to make sure of the size change and the pilots are the same size, the mains were 122, now I have 127.5, not a large jump. I picked up the bike non-running for $200 and found a pile of parts for a police bike. Wish I had a set of running carbs to try on the engine. My mind is locked on the needles being the problem, never seen a needle like them before, I am going to pull one and get a picture posted. BTW if you need police parts I have a bunch of good stuff I'm going to list.

Ok, here is the needle I am talking about, the one on the left I found in my bs34cv carbs, the one on the right is from a 78 z1 00 vm26ss carbs, the needle has no number and I have never seen a taper like that before, no telling where they came from but I feel they are wrong for this carb set, can anyone I'd this needle?

The needle on the left somewhat resembles the ones on my 34cv carbs.
Stubby and blunt
But there is only one grove for the clip and yours looks like it is stepped?
