Threads Weeping - tiny amount

Anyone ever had float bowl 4 mm bolts weep through the threads. Very minor but annoying. Not even enough to drip,Its only a few of them at the back of carbs - 1 and 2 - bike always on centre stand

Since the gasket surrounds the screw hole it sounds like it's time to replace the gaskets. Ed

A less frequent cause of leakage from the float bowl, but sometimes found, is the following:

Some float bowl designs have "ears," which the screws go through to attach the bowls to the main body of the carb.

If a screw is over-tightened, the ear may bend slightly. And in the bent condition, won't allow the float bowl to properly tighten against the gasket.

Usually, the bent ear may be carefully and gently straightened into its original shape/position.

Thanks fellas - i have new OEM gaskets installed ED from PJ Motorsports (been in about a year _ @ 3000km) and bowls are the originals and never been abused . They do have the ears at the rear where the prob is Patton.I have a lot of spare bowls so will go through them. Have changed the bolt head type from phillips - 4 mm x 18.5 mm - originals to allan head 4mm x 16 mm .Only diff between 2 bolts is spring washer on originals (others seal perfectly).Have had this happening on and off (mostly off thankfully) for about a year now before i installed new orings and float needles.(started in the hot about a month before new parts)
It started to get hot here the other day (@30 celcius) and like clockwork the weep begins.Took them off ,had a real good look and only spot i can see any sign of fuel is the bottom of 3 threads 1 and 2 carb.Have some Loctite 542 thread sealant.Never used it before - thought might be worth a try.Got a few things to try .Thanks swest.
One other thing is i always get fuel from the same place - seems to be a few dodgy ones about with all sorts of crap mixed in,

Are sure of where the leak is? Sometimes other spots can leak and will appear to be at the bowl gasket. The fuel pipe would leak onto the outside of the bowl gasket and travel around the bowl to appear to be leaking there. The reason I ask is because if the pipe from 1 to 2 was leaking, it would show up on the bowls of 1 and 2.

The fuel level should be below the gasket level, so if it is leaking while the bike is sitting (not running) on the center stand, then the leak must be coming from somewhere above. (If the floats are allowing the bowls to overfill, it would drip from the overflow tubes as well.)

I've never had a bowl gasket or bolt hole leak, but I had a small leak from the petcock that traveled down the fuel line and made it look like the bowls were leaking.

I have suspected the fuel pipe also . Fuel levels are spot on - never weeps when sitting. - only when you have been riding for a while - stop and start stuff and in Hot weather.It is always just enough to wipe with finger and get a tiny amount (like sweat). Never enough to drip.Standard jetting, mixtures - 21/2 .close enough to perfect sync.All parts internally in top condition.Petcock tested and spot on.2 Overflows always dry. Will keep looking. Lucky i have 2 sets spare carbs. I 'll get it.Persistence pays off most of the time. Thanks loudhvx.

Nipped up those couple of suspect bolts a flys dick .Just went for a ride (@20 km)Town and highway.It is about 30 celcius at the moment (too bloody hot) seems fine but has done this before. Will see how it goes but other carbs are ready to go on if it is actually the fuel pipe.

I wouldn't use sealant. The threads don't go into the carb.

swest, i wouldnt use any sealant inside carbs. I figured by a thousand to one chance that fuel was getting past the oring and somehow also getting to the bolt which of course is nowhere near fuel(probably 5 mm away from oring on mine) and making its way down the thread but it would have to travel upwards ,but i have always been very careful cleaning them and all surfaces are in as new condition.More i think about the more impossible it seems. Seems to be ok now after that nip up but have said that before. Could it be possible, with age some need a tiny more tightening (like i said before only a flies dick tighter). Will try a decent ride in a day or 2 and see how it goes,

If not already done, would check integrity of the o'rings on the various fuel pipes connecting the carb bodies.

And also check for the more remote possibility of a cracked fuel pipe.

Presumably, all the hose connections have already been inspected and found to be leak-free, and with no cracked or deteriorated hoses.
