If its a stock pump gas motor it will run on pond water,89 is fine.
If you run too much octane without enough compression and ignition to burn it off youll just load motor full of carbon deposits B)

Hmmm....I have 111 leaded sitting in the garage..

Then again, at 7.99 a gallon...maybe not!

I run Shell V Power 91 Octane. My owner's manual only calls for 87 octane but I run the 91 because it is ethanol free. Ideally, go to local stations and try to find a brand and grade of fuel that is ethanol free and run that.

MFolks came up with this site awhile back .

pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov

We're headed towards 3 gas stations on the map today that are listed as having 87 and 91 octane / ethanol free gas B)

110 miles on 2.36 gal. of 87 octane ( no ethanol ) = 46.61 miles per gal. B)

I have been getting 45.1 on 89 octane with ethanol.

You are lucky! Around here all gas contains 10% ethanol - no options. Ed

I've ridden over 25k miles in the last 2 years on my internally stock KZ900A4 and used all three fuel grades. I consider 2 variables when filling up: elevation and temperature. If I'm riding up in the mountains (above 5000 feet), I'll use 87 because it ignites easier which works better with the lack of oxygen at those elevations. When I'm running around town and it's less than 95 degrees, I'll run mid-grade. When it is 95 degrees or hotter, I'll run premium. If I'm running Seafoam or other fuel system/combustion chamber cleaner, I'll run Premium.

I have to head West of my house to get it, nothing with in 100 miles of Chicago.

mtbspeedfreak, That's interesting about using higher octane in hotter weather, is that your idea or is it common knowledge?

Because I normally run 89 octane always, and today when I was running the 87 oct. in 90 deg. weather I could hear a little pinging on take offs.

There is ONLY one gas station in the Grand Rapids, Mi. vicinity.
Local for me would be a fifteen mile (one-way) ride to pay $4.99/gallon for ethanol free 92 octane.

they claim they are doing this for the environment .. ethanol / gas mixture makes all engines run worse.. ruins aluminum so your carbs injectors will wear out to make more black smoke come out of your engine plug catalytic converters . its all just a reason to make money ..you put a name like environment and it gives you license to steel from the people ..btw marijuana cures some form of cancer and cigarettes cause some forms..and witch is legal????
