According to kawasaki.com diagram, 1978 KZ1000-A2 has dual "fuel pipes" (aka carb fuel inlet tees), same as 1976 KZ900 and some others.

Each fuel pipe requires its own fuel line.
Typically there are two separate fuel lines from the petcock.

With dual fuel pipes, one is located between carbs 1 and 2, and the other is located between carbs 3 and 4.

Some KZ1000 models have carbs with only a single fuel pipe located in the middle between carbs 2 and 3.
Incidentally, 29mm Mikuni smoothbores use a single fuel pipe.

The oem fuel pipes have a built-in raised o-ring affair that fits snugly into each carb.
Aftermarket fuel tees are now available with standard o-rings.

When an oem fuel pipe gets too loose and starts leaking fuel, some folks wrap the raised areas with teflon tape which tightens the fit. The newer yellow tape is reportedly more fuel resistant than the white tape.

I opted for brand new fuel pipes from Z1 Enterprises, especially since the carbs must be partially separated to replace the fuel pipes.

Good Fortune! :)

am i missing the center fuel line?

Somewhat difficult to tell from the pic angle, but if these carbs are supposed to have only a single fuel pipe, it's missing in this photo.

If these carbs are supposed to have dual fuel pipes, they would be located between 1 and 2 and between 3 and 4.

Looks like maybe a fuel pipe can be partially seen between carbs 1 and 2, or perhaps the remnant of a fuel pipe.

Am thinking the stock 1978 KZ1000-A2 does not have a fuel pump as shown in earlier pics. But don't let that be confusing, because it's not relevant to the fuel pipes.

Am not positive, but also thinking the petcock vacuum tube attaches to one of the carb holder vac sync nipples.

Good Fortune! :)
