I took the tank off so I could get all the plug wires to one side. Put new plugs in the caps. Then in a darkened garage, I check spark. All were even and strong. I have drained the bowls, removed the plugs and allowed the chambers to vent overnight. I've had a long day and will fire it up tomorrow.
The bowl level is a bit high, but no different than it was before. I will remove the carbs and clean them hopefully next week.
I am getting a free compressor tomorrow, but it needs some work to get it running. I'll do the carb cleaning when I get the compressor running.
I may need some instruction in this regard as well.
It needs the feed tube from the pump to the tank (flared fittings?). And the air switch has been removed and a plug installed. This will need to be rectified.
I will also need to get hose and blow gun.
This compressor will be a good score if I can get it running for minimal $.

What size compressor is it? Sounds just like my compressor when I got it. Everything that you need to replace the supply line from the compressor to the tank is available at Home Depot. The switch is a $40 part at Northern Tool, and it should have a small copper line with flared fittings going to the valve on top of the tank. As for your engine problems, I will say that all of your cleaning efforts dislodged some junk that clogged up the needle and seat in that carburetor. Low compression, High float levels and then you get a needle stuck open = too much gas blowing out the flame. I would redo the compression test, adjust the valves, clean the carbs and then report my findings. Lesson to be learned is this. If you have a 35 year old motor that requires four carburetors and a points ignition and it actually runs right, then don't F!@k with it. If you have even compression and spark on all cylinders, then your problem is in the carburetor. Are the carbs, synced? In my mind, the only way that a previously working carb can go dead rich is a stuck open needle and seat or a disconected/broken throttle linkage. My .02.

The compressor is a 30 gallon upright. Not sure of the motor size. 120 volt. I'll pick it up this afternoon. This morning I drained the tank and cleaned the petcock-new gas. I shook the tank around when there was still some gas in it to get most of the debris out. There was a significant amount.

Some time ago there was thread about tank size, and I replied with some numbers. Too many martinis, they were wrong.

KZ 900 tank: 17 litres, of that there is 1.2 litres in reserve, and 1.4 litres that remain on the right side of the frame hump.

Warning: If you ever have to access the fuel on the right side of the tank, either by tipping the bike or tank, there may be accumulated debris that will clog your petcock, filters, or carbs.

I'm writing fom memory and that isn't too reliable any more but if you have a vacuum operated petcock it is fed vacuum through the number two cylinder. If the diaphragm is leaking it will enrich that cylinder. It only takes a small hole to mess up your mixture. Pull the vacuum line to the petcock and see if ther is gas present. I(f there is any at all the diaphragm is shot.
