Can I tell if it's a problem with the pilot system buy running at high rpms for a while, then hit the kill switch and pull in the clutch? Then pull over and check the plugs?

Nope. Throttle chop maneuver is for different carb circuits.

Pilot circuit should allow low steady idle with strong pull away from idle.

Could read plugs after running a few easy miles at about 30 mph in 5th gear where the pilot circuit still has some influence on the fuel mixture.

Plugs shouldn't be black and sooty, but ought to be tan. If too rich, try leaner pilot screw adjustment. Also perform clear tube test to assure fuel level in float bowl is within specs.

A too high fuel level may cause over-rich mixture in otherwise perfect carbs.

Good Fortune! :)

Just got home from work and looking at the latest replies.

Tri, I did try a B7 with no change. Took it out for a short run, pipe cold.

As mentioned before I have always run good fuel filters. I can't imagine any shit getting past them.

I don't know the mechanics of a backfire, when it backfired twice, can crap blow back into the carb ie the choke system?

what if the seafoam helped some stuff that was past the filters get broken free and it clogged a passage in the cast in circuits ,or a jet...it has got to be fuel right...there is no way that it popped and broke/dropped a valve ,cause the compression is still some........imo......

these things get quirks like this more often than a catastrophic failure..........carbs need a cleaning ...final answer.......i dont know ....good luck...two hrs at most...compressor ...sprays..saftey glasses.....fine wires to pass through jets...no snap wire..or sally chally.....

It ran fine before you overdosed it with chemicals  so it's not likely you've suddenly had a mechanical malfunction...

DO NOT poke wire through your jets.

1 - Drain the fuel tank.
2 - Pull the petcock and clean the screen.
3 - Pull the carbs & clean them.Blow them out with air.The jets as well.

Pilot jet orifice is the size of a gnat's arsehole so hold them up to the light so you can see it's clear.

While carbs are off, pull plugs. Install plugs in plug caps and lay them on the head so you can see them all. Crank it over and see how the spark is.

If any sign of weak spark & you're certain condensors are good [points not throwing an arc].....Pull the plug caps and trim just a little off the plug wires so the caps get good contact.

Put it all back together with fresh gas and it should fire right up.

Larry,

I believe you are spot on. I will go thru everything as you said. It will be a first for me to go thru the carbs. Seems a little daunting, but I'll give it a go. Any suggestions or tips on how to make the re & re easier. Seems to me wiggling the carbs in between the boots and holders could get frustrating.

Backfire through the carb happens when combustion occurs inside the cylinder before the intake valve fully closes. This may result from incorrect ignition timing or too tight intake valve clearance (among other reasons).

Would suspect the backfire to go through the carb throat and into the air filter without throwing anything into the choke circuit (or other carb circuits for that matter).

Carbs are easily removed and replaced when fitted with new soft supple air box hoses.
