I have a tester that i put inbetween the wire and plug to check for spark if thats what u mean
The tester likely indicates when the spark plug is receiving at least "some" electrical current at "some" time.
Imo, a better test for spark existence and quality is visual inspection with the plug removed and held against engine head while spinning over the engine with electric starter and ignition switch turned ON. Look for fat blue spark.
This of course doesn't assure a correctly timed spark. Imo, dynamic timing with a strobe type timing light is more accurate than static timing with an ohmmeter or light bulb.
Should be able to see the advancer quickly move back and forth as rpm is varied by blipping the throttle.
Good Luck!

16-40 sprockets
Isn't stock gearing 16-42? Missing two teeth on the rear sprocket would account for some of the low end power loss.
