It really improved low end throttle response on my 78 kz1000!! That and georges excellent rebuild of my carbs which he ID'd as 76 kz900 carbs! Something I would have not caught. WiredGeorge is the man!!!

voltage was checked before and after mod with engine not running - and improvement in voltage noted as in previous post - no load on anything - therefore sdditional load taken by Dyna S - is irrelevant as its only there when running.

Not true. The Dyna S uses full current to the coils whether the engine is running or not as long as the ignition is turned on.

As I said, with the Dyna S, the relay mod will definitely show an improvement since the Dyna S uses almost twice the average current as the stock points setup, and even more if the coils are 3 ohm.

you seem to be missing the point - voltage was improved by carrying out the mod - its a simple fact, furthermore if as you say the coils are taking full current, engine running or not then the improvement in voltage is even better - maintaining an improved voltage while under full load sounds good to me!!

No point in debating this any further - as i said my intention was to point out its a good mod - you obviously have an issue with either the mod itself or its origin - either way it worked well for me - if it helps others then all the better -

end of-

There's no debate. Let's just make sure the facts are straight. I've recommended the mod before and would do it again. But it's not magic, it's just a shortcut. If voltage is low at the coils, it's probably problematic elsewhere. All of those areas should be addressed so the bike charges properly and to prevent fuses from blowing (dirty fuse holders are the main cause of voltage drops leading to blown fuses).

With the Dyna S, you could probably just hard wire the coils to the battery since the Dyna will shut them off when the igition is off. Same is true with the Kaw elec.ign. You really only need the mod with points.

i still havn't done the coil mod do you think my kz1000r would benefit?
or is it for the older zed's.

Kano, disconnect your hot wire from your battery, then unplug your coils from the yellow/red wire. Set the switches to ON and RUN and then connect an ohmmeter to the hot terminal, and to the coil terminal.

If the resistance reads zero, or near zero then the coil mod will do nothing for you. It eliminates resistance in the circuit to the coils by installing new wires.

The losses in voltage only really show up when the coils are getting current. A better indicator would be to compare the battery voltage with the voltage on the yellow/red wire at the coils while the bike is idling. If the difference is more than 1/2 or 3/4 volt, then there are losses somewhere. The Dyna S will almost certainly produce these losses since it uses nearly twice the stock current (through the coils).

The most common culprits are the kill switch, fuse holders, ignition switch, connectors, then the wires themselves, probably in that order.

Just having fun.
As I said, I've recommended WG's mod before and I'm sure I will again.

This is the only degree I use every day.
