Reminds me of Sandman's set up, he has a filter on each side pointing backwards, from this post 2nd page pix:

I think to make it work you'd have to do something like this

Either setup would at least help keep pressures the same across the bank.

I'm kinda wondering if runner length would make any difference at all considering the intake is before any fuel signal or fuel dropout concerns.

Reminds me of an old Bill Cosby album I had years ago called "200 miles per hour", where he describes his friend Carrol Shelby and the car he bought from him.
"PIPES! Its got PIPES!

In the rail design I think the carb on the end of the line will be affected most by the other three. They will be trying to get all the air thus getting progressively leaner down the line. One air supply with 4 pulling air I have to believe the last in line gets the least or at best has to work harder to get it's share. Hey I'm no carb and no dynamic engineer. It just looks that way to me.

As for the pic it's just from a 3d program and a quick rendering. Here is one with different materials and a slightly different angle. Once you build the model the rest is simple.

sorry for showing off ;)

I think youve just "re-designed" the airbox...with a different opening...you might need a jetting change....probably not much more than a pilot...
if you were thinking that it would have some ram air effect...I'm pretty sure the air would be to dirty (turbulent ) at the position you have it...
if you look at most modern sportbikes the ram air intake is at the nose of the bike cleanest air and highest pressure.

It's easy on a V. With an inline it will interfere with your legs or your legs will interfere with it. Unless like rsnick's example you have the cone go to the back. I'm not crazy about that either.
Anyone ever see the Gold Wings with the spider manifolds and single carb that comes up thru the tank? They are pretty cool. I saw one with long stacks. Looked like it would suck your face right off.

how about modifying stock airbox so it draws in more low pressure air like cowl induction B)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

just a thought? would your knees not be covering the air filters? and the idea would to have cold air getting into the filter, cold air being more dence than hot but we are takin and inline 4 air cooled motor, as you move forward the air from the cylinder head and exhaust will be going straight into the filter and it is less dence than cold? plus on a hot day would'nt that get even worse?

I've also been thinking about this subject (new kz650 owner btw)and I came up with 4 mini velocity stacks made of delrin mounted to 2 K&N air filters each with two 2 1/8 openings (1.938 on center) so the opening tapers inside from 1.575 to 2.125.
Filters are only 1.75 tall but 6.25 x 4" wide and should all fit neatly behind the carbs. They look like volkswagen dual carb filters. I even left a little wiggle room to get them on and off. Gonna machine these later this week and carbs should be back from WG soon so I hope this works.
