CRAZY AIRFILTER IDEA was created by mox369
Have no idea if this idea has any merit but i like the look of an airfilter on the side of the bike, just not sure how to get even airflow to all 4 carbs. Check out the picture i crudely drew. Could this work??

Ummm....
OK, interesting idea. What would you make it out of?
Understand that the intake runner length of your bike was calculated by Ma Kaw to reinforce the power characteristics. so, the 3" or so of rubber boot that goes into the stock airbox was all Kaw thought was needed for best tuning. Notice that you've now made all of the runner lengths unequal. Maybe like this:

i dont think thats crazy at all. Drew up a similiar idea once. Just like a turbo plenum except with a filter at the end instead of a turbo, haha

I kinda agree with both of these guys haha
From being a totally soaked behind the ears novice when I bought my KZ to now (when I've at least dried the ears ;))
I can say that the smallest of alterations affect way more than just getting air to the carbs (in this case). The butterfly effect is amplified on a precision combustion motor. Haha.
That being said, I think these bikes are malleable and can be adjusted to run well given any circumstances and nearly any modification

ok so its not crazy, but is it realistic? could it be done in a way that would keep a steady flow of air to every carb? I have no idea what to make it out of...its beyond my abilities either way....i just think it'd look cool.

Just from looking at it it seems as though it would be hard to judge the tuning of each carb. While you may get them set when the bike is sitting stationary I suspect that when at speed the filter out the side might cause a bit of a ram air effect and knock all the previous tuning out of whack.

Just an uneducated guess tho ;)

I think the trick is to get the draw equal between carbs and your idea goes for the opposite. Between a v-twin a side mount makes sense since the intake track is equal but in a inline 4 there is a big difference between #1 and #4's track. You could reduce this effect by having them feed 2 carbs on both sides of the bike but one source feeding the four in sequence I think produces too much difference. IMHO

Another question... why would you want it sticking out the side of your bike? Too Hurley for me and just another expense if she goes down but mainly I think it creates breathing problems. :(

I would think the Pilot/air screw and carb synch would be a royal PITA...

Seems to me anyways you would be chasing this all over the place to get correct... Carbs can be a pain as is, this seems to be a nightmare in the making....

But go for it and let us know how it works out.... :P

Looks car header. 1 into 4. Maybe put 1 on each side. But the rain and knee location might be a problem....Russ

put a turbo on it and be done! unless you can figure out some way to ram the air into a central plenum/airbox then let the carbs draw what they want it looks like a tuning nightmare to me B)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.
