I've seen triple tree stands for sport bikes, and I'm wondering if anyone has been able to use them or something like them for older kz's?

A small floor jack works for me and has more uses.

as long as there is a large enough hole in the bottom of the steering stem for the pin to slip into it will work.

I've had great luck with this jig, and had the entire front-end off the bike to change the head bearings. I trust it as long as the bike's center-stand is locked, and the bike is positioned on a level and solid floor surface, and the bike isn't moved around too much while wrenching on it. Best to break-loose the nuts and bolts before jacking it, then final tighten them after the tire is back on the floor.

These are all good if you have a centerstand. Any DIY ideas for those of us without?

Get a cheap paddock stand from harbor freight or cycle gear.

you can buy a rusted up center stand for cheap, & only install it when you want to raise the bike, & take it off when you're done, only two nuts & bolts, takes about 2 minutes to put on or take off
