I would rather have had it welded and might still. If not it's a bottom one so if it falls off, so be it. It was a piece of sheet aluminum I have on hand. If I spend any money it will be on the one I take off the bike.
Thanks for caring. :)

Allrightie then. I thought it was the original fin, But then again.. that head was really thrashed from what I saw of it. You bought valves for it, might as well fix the fin. or I may not have the full scope of the actual condition of the head Thanks for not taking offense. As Jack Nicholson said in that movie about the truth. lol

That one combustion chamber is the deal breaker. Like Jeff said even with a wire welder it might distort the valve seat. That along with mismatched cam caps make it still a junk head. Better than the ones Oink is selling but not by much.
At least I'll be in the wind and RIDING THE PISS OUT OF IT :woohoo: until I can save for something better.
A 1075 kit, larger valves and better cams comes to mind. B)
BTW I really should get a new cam chain and would like to install some APE crank studs. At that point I could have the crank welded as well.

Looks pretty good Steve! Are you going to grind those valve seats or just lap the valves? And did you put new valve guides in?

The head appeared to have just been done. There was evidence of dye around the seats and the guides look new. No slop. The valves were new as well. The seats are different than I've seen before. Instead of being straight they're curved going into the chamber leaving no place for a three angle seat cut. I'll do a clip on them with a closer look. Someone put some time into this head. Maybe a practice head? Who knows.

I wonder if when the head was milled....did they also sink the valves in deeper? Here is a photo of my head off the 900 I'm rebuilding...for comparison.

Good point. Does it have that radious on the intake seats like mine? I can assemble a intake and exhaust valve to check clearances. I should do that anyway before I tear it down and be committed.

I've been looking for the pics I took when I first got the head but can't find them. I'll keep looking. I found the clip I took when I finally got the last two valves out. Can't see too well because of the glare from the window. All the shims were in the 250-280 range. Thios afternoon I'll install a couple valves and check clearances with the cam I have.

Do you know how the damage occurred to the combustion chamber? Was the head ported at all?
