Since my theory is pure speculation due to no explanation as to the purpose of the fence that I have seen in any of the massive quantities of service information that I have read on my bike and old kaw's in general. , it is the only explanation that makes any sense. The perforated fence is necessary IMO when on the bottom since oil will pool in a solid fence on the 650. Not all oil changes include a filter.
The only logical explanation for the fence is to diffuse the oil flow. around the filter. Of course, everyone else is also free to state your own theories as to it's purpose. Keep in mind that it was not used at all on the earlier models. Perhaps KHI had a failure during the endurance races or 24 hr Daytona racing that the fence helped prevent??

I strongly suspect that it does something important, since Kawasaki has continued to install it on new bikes.
I remain befuddled.

Ah whole bunch of conflicting info on the fence. This is from the 750 E1 ahd H1 manual in the manuals download section. The pics are so dark that you can't tell where it's at, but from reading the assembly instructions it tells you to put the fence over the bolt after it is inserted into the cover, then spring, then washer. DUH. :pinch: I give up.. Just throw it away! lol

Yeah! that's got to be the answer! BECAUSE< I have soooooo much debris in my oil, that the filter clogs constantly. But don't worry, your theory is totally outdone a few posts down from yours BECAUSE If there were two fences installed on opposite ends, no debris could ever become entangled in that totally useless filter. Just weld them together! Problem solved. lol
