Since my theory is pure speculation due to no explanation as to the purpose of the fence that I have seen in any of the massive quantities of service information that I have read on my bike and old kaw's in general. , it is the only explanation that makes any sense. The perforated fence is necessary IMO when on the bottom since oil will pool in a solid fence on the 650. Not all oil changes include a filter.

The only logical explanation for the fence is to diffuse the oil flow. around the filter. Of course, everyone else is also free to state your own theories as to it's purpose. Keep in mind that it was not used at all on the earlier models. Perhaps KHI had a failure during the endurance races or 24 hr Daytona racing that the fence helped prevent??

Seems that speculation and theorizing is all we have since Kawasaki has provided no explanation. The pooling argument makes sense, except I think the 750-4 uses a solid fence on the bottom. Also, since the oil enters the chamber from the side and does not seem to spray directly on the fence, I am not clear on how the fence would affect flow, especially since some are on top, some are on bottom, and some are perforated, and some models do not have one.
I strongly suspect that it does something important, since Kawasaki has continued to install it on new bikes.
I remain befuddled.

I'm sure there is a logical explanation of EVERY part that KHI takes the time to engineer, assign a part number to, list in the parts and service manuals, stamp out and install. Perhaps the solid 750 fence is install wrong.? Nah never happen. LOL

Did I mention MINE was installed wrong when I got my bike, and I was installing it wrong myself for years? :S

Interesting. The 1985 KZ750 Four Kawasaki Service Manual shows the filter without the fence. Ed

Ah whole bunch of conflicting info on the fence. This is from the 750 E1 ahd H1 manual in the manuals download section. The pics are so dark that you can't tell where it's at, but from reading the assembly instructions it tells you to put the fence over the bolt after it is inserted into the cover, then spring, then washer. DUH. :pinch: I give up.. Just throw it away! lol

Maybe it's to keep debris at the bottom of the cavity so it won't clog the filter.

I wonder what would happen if two were installed, one top, one bottom?

Yeah! that's got to be the answer! BECAUSE< I have soooooo much debris in my oil, that the filter clogs constantly. But don't worry, your theory is totally outdone a few posts down from yours BECAUSE If there were two fences installed on opposite ends, no debris could ever become entangled in that totally useless filter. Just weld them together! Problem solved. lol
