Scirocco wrote: Have to ask about the positioning of the oil filter bucket. Some parts diagrams showing the bucket on top other on the bottom of the oil filter.
Which position is right and what is the meaning of the oil filter bucket?
It varies depending on the model. The image below shows the KZ650 setup. On the KZ650 the bucket goes on the bottom, but notice that unlike the one in the other photo the KZ650 bucket is perforated to let the oil easily flow though it. Ed

Don't worry about it. The '73 to '80 900's and 1000's never used them.
Kawasaki started using them on the '81 and up Kz1000's and Kz1100's.

Scirocco wrote: The only answer i can imagine is that the bucket on top of the oil filter did distribute the hot oil flow to a larger filter area and not pointed into one direction that could be damage or perforate the filter paper.
I think we have a winner here! As you can see in this snip from the 81-83 Kz1000/Kz1100 service manual (page 3-27) of the oil pump and filter, the filter is pressurized by the oil pump. If you look closely at the snip, it shows the fence on top of the filter. This would diffuse the oil flow and distribute it evenly around the perimeter of the filter element.

As can be seen in this pic of the filter opening in the oil pan that the pump output is a hole towards the top of the filter opening. The oil is forced through the filter element, then exits into the oil gallery through the filter bypass valve / bolt assembly.

And now if you will all turn to page 6-39 for the filter assembly parts breakdown.

Assembled filter. *note that the fence was installed on the bottom of the filter (wrong) when I got the bike, so I had been assembling it wrong for years until I spotted this pic in the service manual one day.*

Seems to me that the 650 version negates the theory posited above.
