No sparks. I wouldn't try that. look up clear tube test.

Instead crack open the cap to see if its clogged the next time it dies.

So I'm not supposed to see any sparks at the points while the bike is running? Because I remember when I was setting the timing, it was dark out, and it was a light show.

Gas cap? I actually opened it several times yesterday while on a 30 minute ride. Didn't hear any suction or anything. The bike died again yesterday and I almost got stuck out a ways. Last night there were NO warning signs at all. It went from good to hell in seconds. Funny thing was last night it would idle even though it wouldn't run hardly at all. It had zero power and was popping, sputtering, and backfiring the worst I've heard it. I pushed it for a ways and then was able to get it running enough to pull me up a couple of the hills in the neighborhood.

The guys might be onto something about the condensers as you are not suppose to see hardly any sparking........ do you have a fuel filter between the tank and carbs?

I used to - but it seemed to be restricting the flow so I removed them.

Just found breaker points and condenser (two separate items) for about $20 total. Hopefully this will do the trick....

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationLooks like 60's/70's Ford condencers. I used two on my bike back in the day when the closest shop was 60 miles away. Can still get them now $5 a piece at AZ, OR, etc.

Some of the mail order suppliers will stock the double condenser units used on kz ignition, like Z1.
I'm inclined to think that the problem is related to either engine heat or running time.
If the problem happens uniformly after a set interval, I would assume a fueling issue.
If the problem happens quicker in hot weather or with a hot engine, I would suspect an ignition problem.

As you mention popping, sputtering, backfiring, I'm fairly certain that your ignition is on the fritz and that missing sparks are not igniting the fuel, which then ignites in the exhaust on the next spark.
Sometimes a loose carb jet will have the same effect, but they don't screw themselves back in when the engine gets cold.

With heat, either the coils get hot and start breaking down (cheap aftermarket coils or second-hand coils are notorious, the position over the engine doesn't help in kz motors), or the condenser dielectric starts to break down, again engine position does not help.
