Shift lever and pawls was created by retterath
1980 KZ1000 LTD

I pulled the cover off the trans to investigate a shifter that didn't return to center.
I found the rear setup in the pic, with the coil spring bound tight around the boss machined in the engine case.
I try the other setup with the 4 coil spring, and what do you know, it works perfectly. Not only does the shifter return to center, the slightly longer pawls match up with the shift drum, eliminating the need to move the lever in the opposite direction first before a shift.

Yay, a small victory. But then I wiggled the output shaft. . .

This is bad, right.

That will tighten up when you install the sprocket.

Are you sure? There is at least 1/16th inch of movement in the bearing. I also have a growl at low rpm that goes away when the clutch is disengaged. Related?

The sprocket will push on the collar and tighten on the inner bearing race. What bike?

Your shift drum pin plate looks like self made.
Normally the plate has one hole only for the neutral indicator switch.
The ball bearing on the output shaft should be play free.
For me it´s shot and must be replaced with a new one.
This type of bearing is not designed to get play free by torque like the steering neck bearing.

If there is no play when the sprocket is on the bearing is fine.

I'll try tightening the sprocket up after work. fingers crossed.

The funky shift drum is for the poor man's air shifter. The neutral switch kills power to the coils for a split second while shifting.

The cases would have to be split and there is a locating ring groove.

Threads are fine. I'm fully aware of the scope of the project.
Would I be better off swapping in an entire used transmission, since I'm sure more than one bearing will need attention? Or just open it up and see what I've got first?
