Very good... use a 280..
002" is a little tight and I'd probably open those one size too but I also would not be scared to just replace that one 285 with a 280, drain the oil, change the filter, pour in high quality oil (at least 10-40 wet clutch rated oil) and drive it as is for a while but check again in a month or so.

I always make a map of the shims that end up in my bikes after I adjust them It saves saves a lot of time at the next clearance check

Yeah me too... I have lots of little tear sheets in the garage with 8 circles, I or E and numbers in them!
If I could only remember to write the date on them every time! LOL

Don't want to hijack this thread but "wet clutch rated oil". Never heard the term before. Can you elaborate on that. I was just about to change the in my '76 A4

Thank you. Just saved me from a potential serious mistake.

JASO MA ratings.
I've been using Rottela T4 15-40 for a couple years now. Good stuff and inexpensive when buying it gallon bottle from places like Walmart... $15.00 or so. Sometimes on sale for $13.00 per gallon.

I was using Castrol GTX 20-50 and going through a Qt. of oil every 500 miles. Switched to Rotilla and the oil burning stopped. Good stuff.

Since a lot of my riding is in cooler weather I might try the 5-40 Rotella synthetic (for quicker flow) after I use up the 10/40 Valvoline bike oil that's in it now.

I found the same white dog bike site and read up on the JASO ratings. I stopped riding in late '80's so this is all new to me. MissionKz do you live in a warmer climate and that's why you went with the cold 15 rating. I'm in Michigan and we see the entire temperature range here so maybe better for me to stick with the 10/40 unless you like the 15/40 to help larger clearances on a older bike?

I'm just 15 to 16 miles northeast of the city limits of Denver Colorado.
I'm from Detroit though and the winters here are about 20 degrees warmer most of the time. Rarely does it hit 100 here but plenty of 90 degree days. It was -15 just few days ago and 54 degrees the day before that!!

If I use anything lighter than 20-50 in my KZ900 the oil warning light stays on.

I live near Portland, Oregon and my rider is a '76 KZ900 I bought new. I'm also in the process of restoring another one and a '73 Z1.
