If I use anything lighter than 20-50 in my KZ900 the oil warning light stays on.

You need a oil pump.

It's been that way since it was new.......defective maybe.

I live near Portland, Oregon and my rider is a '76 KZ900 I bought new. I'm also in the process of restoring another one and a '73 Z1.

They sold thinner gaskets to cure that issue but they are hard to come by. The Old Kaw Man has lots of them. Id get one, go through it and put it in.

I have been running rotella 15w-40 and have had great results with it. Smooth shifts. However I have noticed oil seeping from a few new places, could be unrelated to using the rotella, just my experience. I am changing the gaskets now, so we will see when it's all back together.

Quick Question. I run synthetic oil in my ZG14/GTR14 AKA Concours 14 and enjoy the smooth shifting. Many of my fellow C14 riders use Rotella in their C14's with only positive results.

My question is this. For years I have been told not to run synthetic oil in my Z1 900. It would be nice to use the same oil in both bikes. What say you? Thanks Tim.

I've been running full synthetic MOTORCYCLE oil (Mobil-1 Racing 4T) in my KZ650 for 10 years with no leaks or other problems. As long as you use oil that is marked JASO-MA compliant it shouldn't cause problems whether it is synthetic or dino. Ed
