"Regarding the ball everyone keeps talking about, I'm pretty sure you can not remove the ball from the clutch cover side of the bike. It needs to come out from the clutch side." yes i agree .if you check the FSM it can only go in from the clutch side.after taking the pressure plate off.

The clutch cover side is what I was talking about, not the sprocket /clutch adjustment Cover. Anyway you slice it, the ball bearing goes in on the right hand side of the bike. B) :woohoo:

Nessism wrote: The 1980 750/4 bikes used a helix type clutch actuation device like the earlier 650's. Sometime in the '81 model build they switched over to the ramp actuation mechanism. The ramp type device tends to fall out of the cover when you disconnect the clutch cable (the early type may as well, not sure). At any rate, you need to get the device indexed correctly or it won't work. It's real easy to get it indexed incorrectly. First time I installed the cover on my 750 there was no resistance in the cable, so I pulled the cover and repositioned the actuation arm by rotating the device one notch so to speak clockwise, and reinstalled the cover. This fixed it up.

Regarding the ball everyone keeps talking about, I'm pretty sure you can not remove the ball from the clutch cover side of the bike. It needs to come out from the clutch side.

I've had that happen a few times where I put the cover back on and had no lever at all and just took it back off and put it back on again and it was ok ....... have no idea what I did to make it right

Can u even fit the ball bearing in the sprocket side by accident?

I don't think so.

Now if he got a bearing the size to fit the sprocket side clutch rod hole and jammed it in there and the ball fell out the clutch side and it pushed through to the clutch release, I can't imagine it would work well and with out noise or damage or both, but stranger things have happened I'm sure. Whew!

Lotsa ifs there, I think he put his clutch tensioner in the wrong anyway and what he is talking about is one of the three ball bearings coming free from the plate that rides up the ramp when pulled, not the clutch rod ball bearing inside.. Hopefully he's not dropping ball bearings in the clutch rod hole.
