Clutch Screw Won't adjust/no clutch return was created by kawasakisubaru
So I took the sprocket cover off while I was checking for a leak, and then once I went to put the cover back on the clutch was completely out of place and the lever wouldn't return.
So i followed the steps in the workshop manual exactly as I should, and when i went to turn the adjustment screw "in until it tightens" it never tightened, and the cable never adjusted.

I also noticed the little single ball bearing that sits in the clutch mechanism on the cover is gone.
The clutch worked totally fine prior to my taking the cover off. I even adjusted the clutch about two months ago.

Any idea as to what could be causing this issue?

Are you sure the ball didn't fall out and roll away when you took the cover off? I would put another ball in and try it again.

Are you serious? You took things apart; a piece (the ball) fell out and is gone; and you cannot figure out what could be causing a problem? Have you considered selling your tools?   Ed

I must have lost the ball LONG ago because the clutch worked fine for a long time until I took it apart again. Which is what confused me.
But I found a replacement bearing of similar size until my new one comes in

You couldn't have lost it LONG ago, your clutch wouldn't have worked without it, it's there for a reason

On the 550, the ball cannot come out through the sprocket side. It can only come out on the clutch side.
I thought the 750 was the same. Can anyone confirm? It may be impossible to lose the ball on the sprocket side.

More likely something has been messed up on the clutch actuator, which is on the sprocket cover.

I have the 1980 750E and the bearing is on the outer side of the push rod. Inside of the sprocket cover. Despite what parts diagrams tell me...

If you have a 1980 KZ750-E engine and the ball is on the sprocket side someone has hosed it up and you need to correct it. If you do not, you will end up with a problem because the clutch push rod will come in contact with the clutch spring plate pusher which spins when you pull in the clutch lever while the engine is running. The ball bearing (#22 in the diagram below) prevents the rod from coming in direct contact with the spring plate pusher (#11). If the ball bearing is not there excessive friction and heat will result, and you will experience a problem. Ed
