Not really spring loaded. Take a look at the link below for one. Ed

I always ride with the oil level right in between the two hash marks in the clutch cover.... that would be on level ground and the bike straight up and down, not on the side stand.
I'm wondering if I should pull the pan and check something out...?

Oil should fill the window when bike is upright. It's on the center stand that it should be in the middle. Sounds like you're running it low.

Just checked my manual and it says "fill between the lines with the bike vertical or on the center stand"... I just check it cold on the center stand and the oil is about 3/16" above the bottom notch/line now....
I put fresh oil and filter in it about 1100 miles ago and have not topped it off.
I'm guessing I've passed about 3-4 ounces of oil in that time.
I figured that by filling back to where I usually fill to when on the center stand and it took about 4 ounces of oil to move it up a bit.

I do like the idea of that little flapper gate in the pan and for a cheap $20 part, fresh oil, filter and an oil pan gasket, I will probably make that a late fall early winter project.

It would work. I don't like the idea of drilling a hole in the bottom of the pan. I'll have to rethink this.

Drill and attach it to the rib inside the pan, it doesn't have to fit tight, just push back slowing oil movement so that the pump pickup isn't starved. When riding local, I always keep my level to the bottom mark only (checked when on the center stand) as it seems to burn somewhat when above that. They have over 3 1/2 liters of oil in them so it should not be problematic.
